15Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinico-neuroradiologic disease entity represented by characteristic magnetic resonance image (MRI) findings of subcortical/cortical hyperintensity in T2-weighted sequences, more often observed in parieto-occipital lobes, accompanied by clinical neurologic alterations. PRES is a rare central nervous system complication in childhood hematologic-oncologic patients and shows very different neurologic symptoms between patients, from numbness o
Wernicke's encephalopathy is an acute neurolopsychiatric syndrome caused by thiamine deficiency, and classically presents with the triad of opthalmopathy, ataxia and altered mentality. Both prolonged total parenteral nutrition and reduced oral intake can induce Wernicke's encephalopathy during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Although early treatment is important for recovery from Wernicke's encephalopathy, the vague symptoms and characteristics hinder early diagnosis. Furthermore
BACKGROUND: Although the importance of palliative care in pediatric patients has been emphasized, many health care providers have difficulty determining when patients should be referred to the palliative care team. The Paediatric Palliative Screening Scale (PaPaS) was developed as a tool for screening pediatric patients for palliative care needs. The study aimed to evaluate the PaPaS as a reliable tool for primary care clinicians unfamiliar with palliative care. METHODS: This was a retrospective
A two-year-old female poodle with abdominal distention was diagnosed with concurrent enteric duplication cyst and lymphangiomatosis. Both lesions were shown as cystic structures, but some characteristic features of enteric duplication cyst were identified including a thick cyst wall and shared blood supply with the duodenum. Although it was challenging to discriminate between the types of cyst based on diagnostic imaging, this report describes the characteristics of each type of lesion using sev
Recent advances in childhood cancer treatment have increased survival rates to 80%. Two out of three survivors experience late effects (LEs). From a group of 241 survivors previously described, 193 were followed at the long-term follow-up clinic (LTFC) of Severance Hospital in Korea; the presence of LEs was confirmed by oncologists. We reported the change in LEs during 3 yr of follow-up. The median follow-up from diagnosis was 10.4 yr (5.1-26.2 yr). Among 193 survivors, the percentage of patient

Purpose: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer have special care needs that are different from those of children and older adults with cancer. This study assessed the perspective and experience of AYAs with cancer in South Korea to identify their care needs. Methods: This study used a convergent mixed-methods design. From July 2020 to November 2021, AYAs with cancer ( N = 77; 15–39 years of age) participated in a quantitative cross-sectional study, using a tool developed by our study t
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and tumor response of 3 cycles of sequential high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) in advanced pediatric solid tumor patients. Medical records of 11 children who underwent 2 consequent courses of reduced conditioning HDCT followed by final HDCT with autologous HSC infusion were reviewed in a retrospective manner. Each median time to an absolute neutrophil count > 0.5 x 10(9)/L was 12, 13, and 12 days. Major toxic reactions were fever, infection,
Acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP) is a rapidly progressive condition of unknown cause that occurs in a previously healthy individual and produces the histologic findings of diffuse alveolar damage. Since the term AIP was first introduced in 1986, there have been very few case reports of AIP in children. Here we present a case of AIP in a 3-yr-old girl whose other two siblings showed similar radiologic findings. The patient was confirmed to have AIP from autopsy showing histological findings of
Chronic pneumonitis of infancy (CPI) is a very rare interstitial lung disease. Its pathological features differ from other types of interstitial pneumonia that occur in adults and children. The mortality rate of CPI is high, even with treatment. We report a case of a 3 month old girl diagnosed with CPI after an open lung biopsy who improved after proper treatment.
