15BACKGROUND: Recurrence of regional cervical lymph nodes in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is not uncommon, and is an important factor affecting the quality of life. The aims of this study are to investigate the risk factors that are associated with regional lymph node recurrence by comparing a group of patients with regional lymph node recurrence with a group without lymph node recurrence, and to analyze the clinical characteristics of recurrent regional lymph nodes in PTC. METH
One of the major factors that limits the treatment effectiveness for gliomas is the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which protects infiltrating glioma cells from the effects of anti-cancer agents. Circulating monocytes/macrophages (Ma) have a natural ability to traverse the intact and compromised BBB and loaded with anti cancer agents could be used as vectors to target tumors and surrounding tumor infiltrated tissue. Nanoshells (NS) are composed of a dielectric core (silica) coated wit
BACKGROUND: The Korean Society of Thyroid Head and Neck Surgery established a nationwide multicenter registry of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) and evaluated the prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of ATC. METHODS: The present study enrolled 329 patients who were diagnosed with ATC between January 2000 and December 2012 at 19 medical centers in Korea. Survival outcomes were evaluated according to various clinical factors and treatments. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis identified age ≥70
BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is a chronic nasal inflammatory disease mediated by an immunoglobulin E mediated process to environmental allergens. Although atopy is a potent predisposing risk factor for allergic rhinitis, local tissue susceptibilities are inevitable for disease expression. The nasal epithelium maintains tissue homeostasis by providing a physical barrier controlled by epithelial junctional proteins. However, the expression of epithelial junctional proteins has not been studied in
Congenital internal auditory canal stenosis is a rare cause of sensorineural hearing loss in children. A retrospective analysis including clinical manifestation and radiological findings was made for seven patients who were diagnosed with congenital internal auditory canal stenosis from 1996 to 2002. Chief presenting symptoms were hearing loss, facial nerve palsy, dizziness, and tinnitus. Hearing loss including deafness was found in five cases, vestibular function loss in four cases, and profoun
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to analyze gene expression profile of tongue cancer associated with early lymph node metastasis using the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) data. STUDY DESIGN: Basic research. METHODS: A total of 515 patients with matched RNAseq data of primary tumor and clinical data from TCGA data were extracted. To compare gene expression profile between early T-stage tongue cancer with cervical lymph node metastasis and late T-stage tongue cancer without cervical metastasis, genomic data of fol
OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between oral health status and thyroid dysfunction. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional analysis using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES) was performed. We investigated the association between oral health-related parameters and the prevalence of thyroid diseases. In addition, the relationship between oral health status and thyroid function test (TFT) results was analyzed. One-way
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Regional lymph node metastases are very common findings of supraglottic cancer. The mechanism of lymphatic metastasis is as yet unknown because there have been no specific markers that could definitely distinguish lymphatic vessels from blood vessels. The aim of this study is to identify the prognostic significance of vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) expression and lymphatic vessel density (LVD) in supraglottic cancer. STUDY DESIGN: The prognostic value of the
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine an appropriate cutoff value for the resection margin according to the initial T classification. METHODS: The medical records of 151 patients treated by surgery for tongue cancer were retrospectively reviewed to identify the significant perioperative parameters and appropriate cutoff value associated with disease-specific survival (DSS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). RESULTS: The posterior resection margin was significantly correlated wi
Cleavage of E-cadherin and the resultant weakness in the cell-cell links in the laryngeal epithelium lining is induced by exposure to acidic contents of the refluxate. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in inducing E-cadherin level changes following acid exposure to the human pharyngeal mucosal cells. E-cadherin levels were inversely correlated with the duration of acid exposure. Treatment with actinonin, a broad MMP inhibitor, inhibited this change. Immuno
Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is caused by pharyngeal mucosal damage due to the reflux of gastric contents, including acid, pepsin, and bile juice. Our previous study has demonstrated that LPRD is associated with the cleavage of E-cadherin, which is facilitated by the acid-activated matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7); however, the mechanism by which the acid activates MMP-7 remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which MMP-7 is activated in the ph
Our study demonstrated the potential role of M1 as a live vector for enhancing the feasibility of PTT in cancer treatment.
Our results suggest that the decreased expression of CCL17 in defective NP epithelium may be closely connected to NP pathogenesis and can be differentially regulated by cytokines in the NP epithelium of patients with CRSwNP.
OBJECTIVE: Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is one of potential factors in recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis with or without polyps. An increase in junctional permeability in the nasal mucosa in LPRD may be due to disrupted protein bridge formation with cell-to-cell adhesion molecules such as E-cadherin. Despite the relationship between nasal mucosal inflammation and LPRD, the clear mechanism by which acid reflux affects the nasal epithelium remains unclear. METHODS: The expression leve
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to examine the expressions of mucin genes MUC1 and MUC4 and to evaluate the difference of their expressions in normal thyroid tissue, follicular adenoma, and papillary carcinoma. Furthermore, we aimed to estimate their prognostic significance in papillary carcinoma. METHODS: We performed semiquantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction for determining the MUC1 and MUC4 mRNA expressions, and immunohistochemical staining was performed to
