15Research Summary: We identify two types of knowledge leverage behaviors undertaken by acquiring firms: integrated and independent knowledge leverage. We address how the prior exploitation or exploration orientation of acquirers influence these two modes of knowledge leverage behaviors. The degree of exploitation of acquirers promotes integrating their existing knowledge with acquired knowledge in innovative actions. In contrast, the degree of exploration of acquirers increases the likelihood tha
Focusing on competitive dynamics, this study examines the strategic issues Boeing has faced in seeking to maintain its leading position in the airline industry. Boeing’s status as a first mover in the aerospace industry has made it a world-leading company; however, the external environment and various pressures have allowed Airbus to emerge as a strong competitor. By conducting a descriptive case analysis, this paper identifies the competitive issues between these two giants, analyzing continuou
This study analyzed the firm’s actual case in an environment where the financial industry’s paradigm changes due to technological development. It focused on Deutsche Bank’s competitive action at the heart of the digitalizing European banking industry. This study presents the competitive dynamics among firms and the effects of such dynamics on firm performance. Based on the competitive dynamics between Deutsche Bank and other banks competing in the European banking industry, the Red Queen theory
Abstract This article examines the strategic nature of banks’ charitable giving by studying bank donations to local nonprofit organizations. Relying on the application of antitrust rules in bank mergers as an exogenous shock to local deposit market competition, we find that local competition affects banks’ local donation decisions. Using county-level natural disaster shocks, we show that banks with disaster exposure reallocate donations away from nonshocked counties, where they operate branches,
This paper mainly focuses on development of the smart crack inspection algorithm facilitating the through-thickness crack during the hole expansion test, which makes it possible to calculate the hole expansion ratio, automatically, with the image processing technique. The proposed crack inspection algorithm consists of six steps such as binarization, blob detection, background deletion, ROI selection, image linearization, and crack identification using the C# language. This algorithm is able to
This study uses the lens of competitive dynamics to examine the coopetition process, which combines both cooperation and competition, employed by Qualcomm within the SoC (System on a Chip) design market related to smart devices. Qualcomm succeeded in developing the first SoC, which integrated GPS (Global Positioning System) and other software, and during the process of developing mobile chips has simultaneously cooperated and competed with competitors. In particular, Samsung, which began as a cu
Localization, the process of establishing the most adequate system in the target market according to the given environment to produce the most viable product in the market, can help multinational enterprises (MNE) to better understand the market, and take the most appropriate actions needed. Business strategies in emerging markets must account for the environment’s distinctive characteristics because emerging markets are characterized by underdeveloped institutions, also known as institutional v
This paper explores how the traditional incumbents coped with the rapid transition provoked by disruptive innovation in the South Korean retail industry. More specifically, the study concentrates on the challenges incumbents faced and their step-by-step attempts to deal with disruption. Shinsegae affiliates and SSG.COM were chosen as the target companies for our descriptive study. Shinsegae is one of the top three retail conglomerates in South Korea, owning various subsidiary brands. SSG.COM is
Abstract Team formation brings together organizational members with complementary capabilities to address projects. This study examines how project-based organizations form teams in response to an ongoing stream of different projects. We consider team formation a phenomenon shaped by organization structure, project attributes, and learning from project experience. We address the effects of two alternative organization structures (functional and team-based) and four project attributes (project si
Abstract This study examines the processes and structures that enable organizations to generate repeatedly and efficiently customized solutions for clients. Case studies of project-based firms reveal that these organizations develop and employ routines to generate customized solutions. Analysis of these cases reveals two different approaches toward project management across organizations. The structural approach relies on managerial and formal processes guided by project leaders. The relational
The Standard of Occupational Safety and Health Management Expense(Safety Management Expense) statute of the Ministry of Employment and Labor has been stated in order to prevent industrial accidents in construction sites. Based on what the owner must estimate Safety Management Expense considering the type of project. Safety Management Expense is defined as the money used during the construction project to prevent industrial accidents in advance. Numerous revisions are made by the Ministry of Empl
While existing studies regarding organizational vacillation theory have focused on examining how vacillation may lead to ambidexterity, few studies have focused on how vacillation itself happens and whether it happens symmetrically or not. To bridge this research gap, this paper analyzed organizational vacillation over time with two canonical cases while examining patterns of organizational structure over time. Unlike previous studies that only revealed the existence of vacillation between centr
