15This paper proposes a syntax-semantics correspondence of locative expressions: This proposal is based on the syntactic hierarchy among three locative structures (PPs, VPs, and verbal affixes) and the semantic hierarchy among four locative arguments (Goal, Source, Symmetric Path, Stative Location). As for the syntactic hierarchy, the verbal affixes are closer to the head verb than the locative/path verbs are, and the locative/path verbs than the locative PPs. As for the semantic hierarchy, the fo
TimeML, TimeBank, and TTK (TARSQI Project) have been playing an important role in enhancement of IE, QA, and other NLP applications. TimeML is a specification language for events and temporal expressions in text. This paper presents the problems and solutions for porting TimeML to Korean as a part of the Korean TARSQI Project. We also introduce the KTTK which is an automatic markup tool of temporal and event-denoting expressions in Korean text.

This paper aims at establishing standard usages of Korean adjectival predicates khu-/cak- ‘big/small’ and manh-/cek- ‘many/few’ based on their syntactic and semantic behavior. The paper focuses on the proper/improper combination of subject and the adjectives, in other words, their semantic/syntactic selection of the subject argument. In order to get an objective and generalized result, we collected data from a large corpus built by National Academy of the Korean Language (2002), which includes a
This paper, based on Nam's (1995) logic of space, proposes a compositional semantics of event structures in terms of eventuality type of predicates and the semantics of locatives. The paper proposes the following typology of English locatives: (i) Stative locatives, (ii) Symmetric locatives, (iii) Telic locatives, and (iv) Atelic locatives. Extending the version of Pustejovskys (1995) Event Structure, the paper further identifies five classes of eventualities: (i) e1[state], (ii) e1
This is a typological study on the syntax and semantics of Goal and Source expressions in natural language. The paper, extending the proposals of Nam (2005), identifies and accounts for the syntactic and semantic asymmetry between Goal and Source arguments. The kernel of the asymmetry is that the Goal argument is "closer" to the verb than the Source is. The paper illustrates this asymmetry from three different but related points of view: (i) The paper illustrates three basic forms of Goal and So
This paper inquires the event structures of experienced/psych predicates in Korean, which reveal the causal, temporal, and focal relations among the sub-events of the experienced event. We focus on two classes of intransitive psych predicates: (i) Agentive experiencer predicates [AEP], whose Experiencer plays a role of Agent in the experiential causing sub-event, and (ii) Patientive experiencer predicates [PEP], whose Experiencer does not play a role of Agent but plays a role of Patient or Theme
This paper focuses on the syntactic and semantic asymmetry between Goal (e.g., into the store) and Source locatives (e.g., from the store), which have not been properly contrasted but classified as directional locatives in the literature. Based on their syntactic and semantic asymmetry, the paper argues that these locatives have distinct underlying base positions in extended VP-structure and different semantic scope/contribution in event structure. This paper claims: (i) Goal PPs are generated u
