12Colquitt et al. <i>(Journal of Applied Psychology,</i> 2000, 85, p. 678) integrative theory based on meta-analysis and model testing has served as the foundation for our understanding of training motivation. However, the applicability of the theory today may be limited for several reasons. There has been significant growth in training motivation research since Colquitt et al. (<i>Journal of Applied Psychology,</i> 2000, 85, p. 678) proposed and tested their theory. Also, advances in meta-analysi
The current article examines if, and under which conditions, there exists a positive relationship between working with friends and group performance. To do so, using data from 1,016 groups obtained from 26 studies, we meta-analyzed comparisons of the performance of friendship groups versus acquaintance groups. Results show that friendship has a significant positive effect on group task performance (Cohen's d = 0.31). Furthermore, this relationship was moderated by group size (i.e., the positive
Although teams of negotiators are widely assumed to be better at unlocking integrative solutions compared to individual negotiators, the interteam negotiation context is characterized by unique challenges that can make effective collaboration between teams difficult. We extend our theoretical understanding of interteam negotiations by offering novel insights about when and why teams realize their potential in integrative negotiations. Specifically, we propose a theoretical model that explains ho
Abstract In this research, we argue that conscientiousness can be a key factor in accounting for the racial pay gap among Black and White workers. Drawing from shifting standard and status characteristics theories and the literature on occupations, we propose that conscientiousness yields differential rewards for Blacks and Whites because of the incongruence between stereotypes about Black workers and conscientiousness. We further suggest the occupational value of status as an occupational‐level
Spurred by the expansion of world trade and the increasing number of disputes involving documentary credits -- a global market now estimated at a staggering US$500 billion in letters of credit outstanding -- the International Chamber of Commerce's (“ICC”) is currently developing rules for the resolution of disputes arising from letters of credit issued under the Uniform Customs and Practices for Documentary Credits (“UCP”). The ICC's ongoing work in this area raises a host of issues related to t
In the current paper, we develop and test a theoretical model aimed at understanding the relationship between friendship and group performance. Specifically, using data from 924 teams in 24 studies, we examined whether and how working with friends, versus non-friends, would influence group task performance. Results show that friendship has a positive effect on group task performance (d=0.45). Furthermore, this main effect was moderated by task interdependence (i.e., high versus low) and task foc
Organizations rely on teams to negotiate over the division and allocation of scarce resources (e.g., two departments discussing budget, space, and personnel needs). These teams are often organized hierarchically, such that they have a clear and designated leader with greater decision-making authority than the rest of the team. Existing work suggests that such hierarchical teams suffer from greater intra-team competition. However, it remains unclear from this research how hierarchical differentia
Based on a meta-analytic review of 168 independent studies, we provide an updated model of training motivation. Our results largely support Colquitt et al.’s (2000) integrative theory of training motivation but suggest the nomological network should be expanded to include additional antecedents (e.g., goal orientation, openness to experience, extraversion, agreeableness) and outcomes (e.g., affective commitment, turnover intentions). Moreover, meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) s
We examine how a specific type of within-team role differentiation—namely, the “good cop/bad cop” negotiation strategy—impacts value creation in negotiations with integrative potential. We theorize and test that the “good cop/bad cop” role differentiation strategy can influence how value is created in inter-team negotiations. The results of four team-on-team negotiation experiments show that greater value (i.e., greater joint gains) is created when one team uses the “good cop/bad cop” strategy a
This symposium aims to introduce novel psychological states and emphasize the importance of social contexts for gender inequality, suggesting that management scholars must adopt a broader lens beyond the traditional focus on gender disparities in human capital and occupations when considering gender inequality issues in organizations. Specifically, while introducing novel psychological states and individual characteristics for gender inequality, we emphasize the significance of scrutinizing soci
The literature on racism in the workplace has shed much light on the impact of racial discrimination on career outcomes, especially with respect to psychological processes (e.g., biases, attributions, perceptions, and decision-making). However, there has been relatively little research on the role of the occupational environment in racial inequality. Because the focus of most previous studies has been on income or types of occupations, a comprehensive understanding of the occupational contexts a
