15One of the serious concerns in network design is creating an efficient and appropriate network capable of efficiently migrating the passenger’s mode of transportation from private to public. The main goal of this study is to present an improved model for combining the feeder bus network design system and the railway transit system while minimizing total cost. In this study, the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and the water cycle algorithm (WCA) were employed to optimize feeder bus and ra
Internationally, there are heightened demands for efficient public transportation systems due to high population growth rates in urban areas and their associated increased trip demands within and across city boundaries. An ideal and sustainable public transportation system should satisfy its passengers while minimizing operation costs that are often associated with energy consumptions. One such cost-effective approach is establishing an integrated public transit system. A transit system generall
Missing value imputation approaches have been widely used to support and maintain the quality of traffic data. Although the spatiotemporal dependency-based approaches can improve the imputation performance for large and continuous missing patterns, additionally considering traffic states can lead to more reliable results. In order to improve the imputation performances further, a section-based approach is also needed. This study proposes a novel approach for identifying traffic-states of differe
Public transportation can have an efficient role ingainingtraveler satisfaction while decreasing operation costs through establishing an integrated public transit system. The main objective of this research is to propose an integrated multimodal transit model to design the best combination of both railway and feeder bus mode transit systems, while minimizing total cost. In this paper, we have proposed a strategy for designing transit networks that provide multimodal services at each stop, and fo
This study presents an analytical method for dynamically adjusting toll plaza capacity to cope with a sudden shift in demand. The proposed method uses a proxy measure developed using discharge rate observed at toll plazas and segment travel times measured by probe vehicles. The effectiveness of the method has been evaluated by analyzing the empirical data obtained from toll plazas in the San Francisco Bay Area before and after toll plaza capacity changed. Findings indicate that the estimated num
Existing research on the transit network design problem has tended to focus on minimizing the various costs for both transit operators and users. However, to implement an appropriate and effective transit network in urban environments, it is important not to overly simplify the intrinsically complex nature of real-life network designs. In particular, the minimization of variance in transit service levels typically employed in existing methods can be significantly improved by incorporating a tran
As a location-based services problem, the concierge service problem is to find a minimum total cost for purchasing predetermined types and quantities of items with the shortest paths connecting the locations where the items are available. These locations are defined as points of interest (POIs). The total cost includes purchasing and stopping costs at POIs as well as the travel cost from origin to destination. To respond to a request for such a service, a search algorithm should be reasonably fa
Dwell time is a critical factor in constructing and adjusting railway timetables for efficient and accurate operation of railways. This paper develops dwell time estimation models for a Shinbundang line (S line) in Seoul, South Korea using support vector regression (SVR), multiple linear regression (MLR), and random forest (RF) techniques utilizing archived real-time metro operation data along with smart card-based passenger information. In the first phase of this research, the collected data ar
The bicycle, an active transportation mode, has received increasing attention as an alternative in urban environments worldwide. However, effectively managing the stock levels of rental bicycles at each station is challenging as demand levels vary with time, particularly when users are allowed to return bicycles at any station. There is a need for system-wide management of bicycle stock levels by transporting available bicycles from one station to another. In this study, a bicycle rebalancing mo
