Loop Diuretics in Clinical Practice
Se Won Oh, Sang Youb Han
SJR Q2Electrolytes & Blood Pressure

Diuretics are commonly used to control edema across various clinical fields. Diuretics inhibit sodium reabsorption in specific renal tubules, resulting in increased urinary sodium and water excretion. Loop diuretics are the most potent diuretics. In this article, we review five important aspects of loop diuretics, in particular furosemide, which must be considered when prescribing this medicine: (1) oral versus intravenous treatment, (2) dosage, (3) continuous versus bolus infusion, (4) applicat

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Sodium intake was reported to be related to metabolic syndrome (MS). Although a strong association between sodium intake and blood pressure (BP) has been reported, the relationship between sodium intake and other components of MS is unknown. An observational study of 18,146 adults in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV-V databases (2008-2011) was performed. Estimates of 24-h sodium excretion were made from a single fasting urine sample. A significant positive associatio

Se Won Oh, Eun Seong Lee, Sejoong Kim, Ki Young Na, Dong‐Wan Chae, Suhnggwon Kim, Ho Jun Chin
SJR Q2BMC NephrologyOA

BACKGROUND: Bilirubin (BIL) has been recognized as an endogenous antioxidant that shows a protective effect for cardiorenal diseases. We investigated whether administration of BIL had a protective effect on cyclosporine (CsA)-induced nephropathy (CIN), and examined the effects of BIL on the oxidative stress and apoptosis. METHODS: BIL was pretreated intraperitoneally three times for a week (60 mg/kg), and CsA was injected for 4 weeks (15 mg/kg/day, subcutaneous). Proximal tubular epithelial (HK2

Erythropoietin Improves Long-Term Outcomes in Patients with Acute Kidney Injury after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Se Won Oh, Ho Jun Chin, Dong‐Wan Chae, Ki Young Na
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Previous studies reported the beneficial effect of erythropoietin (EPO) in acute injuries. We followed patients with and without acute kidney injury (AKI) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and evaluated the effect of EPO on long-term outcome. We also assessed the efficacy of urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) as a predictive marker of AKI. Seventy-one patients scheduled for elective CABG were randomly given either 300 U/kg of EPO or saline before CABG. The prim

Se Won Oh, Jihyun Yang, Myung-Gyu Kim, Won Yong Cho, Sang‐Kyung Jo
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

INTRODUCTION: Renal hyperfiltration (RHF) has been found to be an independent predictor of adverse cardiovascular outcome. However, it remains uncertain whether it is precursor of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a healthy population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To determine relative risks and identify the predictor of incident proteinuria and decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in subjects with RHF. A total of 55,992 subjects aged ≥20 years who underwent health check-up during 2004

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Sodium intake is associated with obesity and metabolic disorder in the general population. However, sodium intake is significantly reduced according to the decrease of energy intake in older adults although the prevalence of obesity is higher than younger adults. We evaluate the association of sodium excretion (UNa) with blood pressure, obesity, metabolic disorders, and albuminuria according to age. An observational study using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surve

BACKGROUND: A recent collaborative meta-analysis by Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes reported that an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and an albumin-to-creatinine ratio of ≥ 10 mg/g were independent predictors for mortality in the general population. However, selection bias, heterogeneity of the cohorts and measurement issues could be limitations. METHODS: We analyzed the relationship of eGFR and proteinuria with mortality in the Korean general populatio

Cobalt Chloride Attenuates Oxidative Stress and Inflammation through NF-κB Inhibition in Human Renal Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells
Se Won Oh, Yun-Mi Lee, Sejoong Kim, Ho Jun Chin, Dong‐Wan Chae, Ki Young Na
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

We evaluated the effect of cobalt chloride (CoCl2) on TNF-α and IFN-γ-induced-inflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2 cells). We treated HK-2 cells with CoCl2 before the administration of TNF-α/IFN-γ. To regulate hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression, the cells were treated CoCl2 or HO-1 siRNA. CoCl2 reduced the generation of ROS induced by TNF-α/IFN-γ. TNF-α/IFN-γ-treated-cells showed an increase in the nuclear translocation of phosphorylated NF-κBp65

Associations between Renal Hyperfiltration and Serum Alkaline Phosphatase
Se Won Oh, Kum Hyun Han, Sang Youb Han
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Renal hyperfiltration, which is associated with renal injury, occurs in diabetic or obese individuals. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level is also elevated in patients with diabetes (DM) or metabolic syndrome (MS), and increased urinary excretion of ALP has been demonstrated in patients who have hyperfiltration and tubular damage. However, little was investigated about the association between hyperfiltration and serum ALP level. A retrospective observational study of the 21,308 adults in the
