Mortality reduction with physical activity in patients with and without cardiovascular disease

SJR Q1European Heart JournalOA

AIMS: Physical activity has been shown to reduce mortality in a dose-response fashion. Current guidelines recommend 500-1000 metabolic equivalent task (MET)-min per week of regular physical activity. This study aimed to compare the impact of leisure-time physical activity on mortality in primary versus secondary cardiovascular prevention. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included a total of 131 558 and 310 240 subjects with and without cardiovascular disease (CVD), respectively, from a population

Improved oral hygiene care attenuates the cardiovascular risk of oral health disease: a population-based study from Korea

Oral hygiene care such as frequent tooth brushing and regular dental visits for professional cleaning reduced the risk of future cardiovascular events in healthy adults. This study also suggests that improved oral hygiene behaviour may modify the association between oral health and cardiovascular diseases.

Biodegradable-polymer drug-eluting stents vs. bare metal stents vs. durable-polymer drug-eluting stents: a systematic review and Bayesian approach network meta-analysis

All DESs but PES and ZES-E were superior to BMS in terms of ST within 1 year. Cobalt-chromium everolimus-eluting stents was safer than any DES even including BP-BES. Our results suggest that not only the biodegradability of polymer, but the optimal combination of stent alloy, design, strut thickness, polymer, and drug all combined determine the safety of DES.

OBJECTIVE: Plasma level of N-terminal-pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a reliable prognostic factor in patients with heart failure (HF). However, it is unclear how differently the biomarker predicts adverse outcomes in HF with preserved EF (HFpEF) versus HF with reduced EF (HFrEF). METHODS: From the Korean Heart Failure registry, a prospective multicentre cohort for consecutive patients who were hospitalised for acute HF syndrome, those with available NT-proBNP and LVEF measurements

Abstract Predicting the risk of cardiovascular disease is the key to primary prevention. Machine learning has attracted attention in analyzing increasingly large, complex healthcare data. We assessed discrimination and calibration of pre-existing cardiovascular risk prediction models and developed machine learning-based prediction algorithms. This study included 222,998 Korean adults aged 40–79 years, naïve to lipid-lowering therapy, had no history of cardiovascular disease. Pre-existing models

The purpose of the present study was to describe the temporal trends in prevalence and management status of hypertension in Korea between 1998 and 2015. Data of adults who were aged 30 years or older were extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationwide representative population-based survey. Hypertension was prevalent in 30.5% of Korean adults. The age and sex standardized prevalence showed little change between 1998 and 2015. The elderly population and me

This study suggests that short-term exposure to PM2.5 triggers atrial fibrillation. However, we found no evidence linking atrial fibrillation with long-term exposure to air pollution.

Elevated BP is a strong predictor of future cardiovascular events including cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure. This study showed that the log-linear relationship between BP and cardiovascular events extended down to a BP of ≥90/40 mmHg. Although hypertension is defined using a lower systolic BP cut-off of ≥130 mmHg, the diastolic BP component of ≥80 mmHg seems disproportionately low.

The 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) hypertension guideline lowered the threshold defining hypertension and treatment target from 140/90 mmHg to 130/80 mmHg. We compared the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline and the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC8) report with regard to the current status of hypertension using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The association between blood pressure (BP) control and long-term major cardiovascular outco
