15BACKGROUND: Recently, proteomic technologies have demonstrated that several proteins are differently expressed in various body fluids of patients with endometriosis compared with those without this condition. The aim of this study was to investigate proteins secreted in urine of patients with endometriosis using proteomic techniques in order to identify potential markers for the clinical diagnosis of endometriosis. METHODS: Urine samples were collected from women undergoing laparoscopy for diffe
PROBLEM: The aim of this study was to evaluate serum and urinary levels of vascular endothelial growth factors, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase (sFlt-1) in patients with endometriosis. METHOD OF STUDY: During surgery for pelvic pain, pelvic mass or infertility, serum and urine were collected. Of 70 patients, 46 had histology-proven endometriosis and 24 patients without endometriosis participated as controls. RESULTS: Serum TNF-alpha levels and urinar
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level and pattern of cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) expression in endometriosis and to investigate the correlation between the expression of Cox-2 and several clinicosurgical parameters. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with endometriosis and 21 patients with other benign gynecological conditions were enrolled. The eutopic endometrium was sampled by pipelle, and fragments of ovarian endometrioma and non-endometriotic ovarian cysts were sampled
PROBLEM: The aim of this study was to evaluate osteopontin (OPN) mRNA expression in eutopic endometrium and plasma OPN levels in patients with endometriosis. METHOD OF STUDY: A total of 79 patients with histologically confirmed endometriosis and 43 patients without endometriosis participated in this study. OPN mRNA expression in endometrial tissues was measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and plasma concentrations of OPN were quantified using a specific commercial s
The region of the murine major histocompatibility complex (MHC) between the Pb (A beta 3) and Ob (A beta 2) genes controls the expression of an intracellular complex named the LMP (low molecular weight polypeptide) complex. DNA probes for at least seven different genes mapping to this region were isolated. These hybridize to a minimum of eight different transcripts ranging from approximately 1.3 to 3.7 kilobases (kb). The deduced amino acid sequences of the corresponding cDNAs indicate that thre
OBJECTIVE: Although the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is effective in reducing the recurrence of endometriosis-associated pain, its efficacy in preventing endometrioma recurrence is questionable. We compared the efficacy of postoperative use of LNG-IUS with oral contraceptives (OC) for preventing endometrioma recurrence. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Medical university hospital. POPULATION: Ninety-nine women with endometriomas. METHODS: A chart review wa
This research aimed to evaluate the potential therapeutic effects of Rg3 on endometriosis and identify target miRNAs. We designed an in vitro study using human endometrial stromal cells (HESCs) obtained from patients with endometriosis and an in vivo study using mouse models. HESCs were treated with Rg3-enhanced red ginseng extract (Rg3E); real-time PCR and microarray profiling, transfection, and western blot were performed. Mouse endometriosis models were developed and supplemented with Rg3E fo
Because energy production involves oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondria are major sources of reactive oxygen species in the cell. Recent findings indicate that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants may play a role in the etiology of certain autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between mtDNA polymorphisms and susceptibility to endometriosis. This study included 198 patients with histologically confirmed endometriosis and 1
Background: Repair of DNA double strand break (DSB) is an important mechanism for maintaining genetic stability during a DNA damage event. Although, a growing body of recent evidence suggests that DNA DSBs and related repair mechanisms may be important in ovarian aging and in various cancers, there are few reports in endometriosis. We, therefore, examined expression levels of genes pertaining to DNA DSB repair in patients with endometriosis to assess the potential effects on ovarian reser
