15The influence of individual difference variables on second language (L2) listening comprehension has been an area of research that has been gaining renewed attention in recent years. The current study investigated the effects of two cognitive variables, aptitude and metacognitive awareness, on 107 native-Korean, English as a foreign language learners’ listening comprehension. Moreover, the study examined whether metacognitive awareness mediated the relationship between aptitude and L2 listening
Abstract The current study is an approximate replication of Gray and DiLoreto’s (2016) study, which proposed a model predicting that course structure, learner interaction and instructor presence would influence students’ perceived learning and satisfaction in online learning, with student engagement acting as a mediator between two of the predictors and the outcome variables. Using mixed methods, the current study investigated whether Gray and DiLoreto’s model would be able to explain the relati
Abstract This study examined the moderating role of two individual difference factors, metacognitive awareness of listening and motivation, in young second language (L2) learners’ incidental vocabulary acquisition from listening to stories. Participants were 66 fifth-grade English as a Foreign Language learners in South Korea who were randomly assigned to one of two groups: listening to stories or control. A vocabulary meaning recognition test was administered as a pretest, posttest, and delayed
Test-taker characteristics (TTCs), or individual difference variables, are known to be a systematic source of variance in language test performance. Although previous research has documented the impact of a range of TTCs on second language (L2) learners’ test performance, few of these studies have involved young learners. Given that young L2 learners undergo rapid maturational changes in their cognitive abilities, are susceptible to affective factors in unique ways, and have little autonomy with
Abstract The current study investigated the impact of AI‐mediated interaction on L2 learners' oral speaking ability, summarizing ability, and perceptions. Participants were EFL university students from South Korea who were randomly assigned to one of three groups: aiSPEAK, aiSUM, and control. The two experimental groups, aiSPEAK and aiSUM, engaged in interactional exchanges with ChatGPT‐3.5 to complete oral summary tasks, while the control group completed the same tasks without using an AI tool.
The present study investigated newly recruited native-speaking teachers of the English Programin Korea (EPIK) with a focus on their individual characteristics, their perceptions on second language (L2) learning and teaching processes, and their teaching experience as a variable (novice vs. expert) in their understanding of language learning and teaching processes. A questionnaire wasgiven to 244 EPIK teachers. Analysis of the self-reported data revealed that EPIK teachers were mostly in their 20
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has produced numerous criticisms and adaptations, which proves its enduring power, just as the undead Creature in the novel has fascinated generations of readers. Yet, while critical attention is often given to the two main characters, Victor Frankenstein and his deformed “son,” the Creature, readers tend to be oblivious to the significance of the novel’s framing narrative and its narrator, Robert Walton. This essay examines Walton as the moral center of the novel, in
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the development of English article accuracy in second language writing following direct or indirect corrective feedback (CF). Participants were 56 middle-school-aged learners of English nested within four classrooms who were studying for the writing portion of the Secondary School Admission Test. In this longitudinal analysis, each student completed four essays, with a weekly gap between each assignment. On the measures of writing accuracy, adole
Chang-rae Lee’s first two novels, Native Speaker (1995) and A Gesture Life (1999), explicitly deal with the complex psychology of an Asian American man straddling two continents and two cultures. Native Speaker foregrounds the political aspect of Asian American experiences. Its main character, John Kwang, is an ethnic politician who not only seeks a particular voice for his own community but also wants to speak for American people as a whole. Lee employs a trope of visibility and invisibility fo
