15Hypertension is the leading cause of death in human being, which shows high prevalence and associated complications that increase the mortality and morbidity. Controlling blood pressure (BP) is very important because it is well known that lowering high BP effectively improves patients' prognosis. This review aims to provide a focused update of the 2018 Korean Hypertension Society Guidelines for the management of hypertension. The importance of ambulatory BP and home BP monitoring was further emp
BACKGROUND: The inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP) IV shows protective effects on tissue injury of the heart, lung, and kidney. Forkhead box O (FoxO) transcriptional factors regulate cellular differentiation, growth, survival, the cell cycle, metabolism, and oxidative stress. The aims of this study were to investigate whether the DPP IV inhibitor sitagliptin could attenuate kidney injury and to evaluate the status of FoxO3a signaling in the rat remnant kidney model. METHODS: Rats were rece
Several studies have demonstrated the nephroprotective effects of estrogen on renal damage. In light of the inconsistent results of previous findings, this study aims to evaluate the in-depth role of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) on the development of end stage renal disease (ESRD). 3,109,506 Korean adult women who had undergone a medical examination in 2009 (index year) were initially identified for inclusion in this study. We excluded subjects had not experienced menopause naturally, had da
BACKGROUND: Weight reduction is a lifestyle intervention that has been introduced for prevention and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We investigate the additive anti-proteinuric effect of weight reduction on the usage of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and its potential mechanisms in hypertensive CKD patients. METHODS: This study is a subanalysis of data from an open-label, randomized, controlled clinical trial. Among the 235 participants, 227 were assigned to subgroups accor
In an elderly prospective cohort, CKD diagnosed by current criteria is related to an increase in the number of concurrent CKD complications and the development of new CKD complications.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of disseminated intravascular coagulation and to determine whether the presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation is associated with major adverse events in patients with primary post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) who present to the emergency department. This retrospective case-control study was conducted in the emergency department of a university-affiliated, tertiary referral center between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2013. Patients we
We found a significant relationship between proteinuria and the risk of overall and site-specific cancer development. Further studies are needed to find an explanation of these findings.
BACKGROUND: Diet modification, especially a decrease in salt intake, might be an important non-pharmacological strategy to improve chronic kidney disease (CKD) prognosis. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a prospective cohort study to investigate whether an intensive low-salt diet education program effectively attenuated the rate of renal function decline in hypertensive patients with CKD. METHODS: This cohort study recruited 171 participants from a previous open-labelled, case-controlled, randomized cli
OBJECTIVE: The Mortality in Severe Sepsis in the Emergency Department (MISSED) score was derived to predict in-hospital mortality in septic patients in the emergency department (ED). The present study aimed to validate the MISSED score in patients receiving early goal-directed therapy (EGDT). METHODS: Data were analyzed from 280 patients who received EGDT in a tertiary center ED in Korea. Age 65 years and above, albumin level 27 g/l or less, and international normalized ratio of at least 1.2 wer
OBJECTIVES: To determine the importance of a decrease in serum sodium concentration within the normal range in elderly adults. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. SETTING: The Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging. PARTICIPANTS: Randomly selected, community-based elderly population with a corrected serum sodium level between 135.0 and 145.0 mEq/L (N = 949). MEASUREMENTS: Survival status was determined during 63.3 ± 16.6 months of follow-up. RESULTS: Participants were divided into corrected sodiu

It is not well described the pathophysiology of renal injuries caused by a high salt intake in humans. The authors analyzed the relationship between the 24-hr urine sodium-to-creatinine ratio (24HUna/cr) and renal injury parameters such as urine angiotensinogen (uAGT/cr), monocyte chemoattractant peptide-1 (uMCP1/cr), and malondialdehyde-to-creatinine ratio (uMDA/cr) by using the data derived from 226 hypertensive chronic kidney disease patients. At baseline, the 24HUna/cr group or levels had a
