A snap of your true self: How self-presentation and temporal affordance influence self-concept on social media
Sukyoung Choi, Dmitri Williams, Hyeok Kim
SJR Q1New Media & Society

This study examined how self-presentation on social media influences the way people view themselves. It also examined whether that varies with sites using two temporal features: posts which have a short life (ephemeral) and those which live indefinitely (permanent). Drawing on both the notion of public commitment and self-symbolizing, our experiment provided a critical test of two rival theory-driven hypotheses—one suggesting a greater internalization of presented self on permanent rather than e

Effects of Coffee Extracts with Different Roasting Degrees on Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Systems in Mice
Sukyoung Choi, Soohan Jung, Kwang Suk Ko
SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Coffee roasting affects the taste, color, and aroma of coffee. The Maillard reaction, a major reaction during the roasting process, produces melanoidin, which affects the overall antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory effects of coffee. In this experiment, coffee roasting was divided into four degrees: Light, Medium, City, and French. To examine the in vivo antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of coffee extracts with different roasting degrees, we used 10-week-old male C57BL/6 mice. Mic

Sexist AI: An Experiment Integrating CASA and ELM
Joo-Wha Hong, Sukyoung Choi, Dmitri Williams
SJR Q1International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction

This study employed an experiment to test participants’ perceptions of an artificial intelligence (AI) recruiter. It used a 2 (Specialist AI/Generalist AI) × 2 (Sexist/nonsexist) design to test the relationship between these labels and the perception of moral violations. The theoretical framework was an integration of the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) and Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) approaches. Participants (n = 233) responded to an online questionnaire after reading one of four scen

Between Instagram browsing and subjective well-being: Social comparison or emotional contagion?
Sukyoung Choi, Eun‐Mee Kim
SJR Q1Media Psychology

Two studies examined which theoretical approach–social comparison and emotional contagion–is more appropriate to explain the mechanism underlying the association between Instagram browsing and subjective well-being. We assessed both between-person and within-person associations using a quasi-experiment (Study 1) and a 7-day diary study (Study 2). Results suggest that the mechanisms behind affect and life satisfaction differ. In terms of affect, the emotional contagion perspective was supported.

Temporal Framing in Balanced News Coverage of Artificial Intelligence and Public Attitudes
Sukyoung Choi
SJR Q1Mass Communication & Society

This study investigates how balanced news coverage, presenting both the positive and negative aspects of artificial intelligence (AI), may lead to attitudinal changes among the public when it is paired with different temporal frames. Different construal levels associated with temporal distance and evaluations of pros and cons provide a theoretical grounding to understand these dynamics. The results of an online experiment showed that exposure to the near-future temporal framing of AI (vs. distan

How the Public Makes Sense of Artificial Intelligence: The Interplay Between Communication and Discrete Emotions
Sukyoung Choi, Chul‐joo Lee, Andrew Park, Jung Ah Lee
SJR Q1Science CommunicationOA

While artificial intelligence (AI) garners widespread media attention as an emerging technology, empirical research on how AI-related information influences public opinion is scarce, especially among those with preexisting emotions toward AI. Utilizing a survey of 1,206 U.S. adults, this study examined how communication about AI and three discrete emotions (anger, fear, and hope) jointly affect public attitudes. More exposure to AI information from mediated sources was linked to stronger support

Mingxuan Liu, Sukyoung Choi, Do Own Kim, Dmitri Williams
SJR Q1New Media & SocietyOA

The need satisfaction and psychological benefits derived from gameplay are generally understudied for older video game players. This study connects the Self-Determination Theory, Motivational Theory of Life-Span Development, and Socioemotional Selectivity Theory to understand players’ in-game behaviors and their corresponding need satisfaction from a developmental perspective. Survey data from 1213 randomly sampled World of Tanks players were combined with their behavioral data to investigate ho

Fatty acid analysis is an essential step in evaluating the potential of macroalgae for biodiesel production. An extraction method was developed to simultaneously analyze up to five types of biodiesel-fuel-related fatty acids (myristic acid, palmitic acid, cis-palmitvaccenic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid) in macroalgae using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Lypophilization and solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques were applied to improve the extraction efficie

Understanding Social Interaction and Relationships in and through Online Video Games
Sukyoung Choi, Mingxuan Liu, Dmitri Williams
Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication

Abstract Video games, which have become the largest medium on the planet, serve as virtual third spaces where interpersonal relationships are extended, modified, or even formed and dissolved. Extant research has identified various affordances of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs, or MMOGs) that facilitate or hinder the development of interpersonal relationships. In-game elements, such as in-game groups (e.g., guilds, clans), communication features, and co-play, allow players to interact w

Chul‐joo Lee, Cabral A. Bigman, Sukyoung Choi, Xiaoquan Zhao
SJR Q1Communication Research

This study examines whether and how exposure to information about health disparities from mediated and interpersonal sources and political trust are jointly associated with policy support and political advocacy. Using a two-wave panel survey design with a national U.S. sample, we found that political trust moderated the association between exposure to health-disparities information from interpersonal sources and policy support. Specifically, a negative relationship between exposure from interper
