15The objective of this study was to identify antepartum risk factors for peripartum hysterectomy in women with placenta previa. The medical records of women with placenta previa who underwent cesarean section (C/S) were reviewed retrospectively. Data regarding the reproductive history and peripartum outcomes were analyzed. Multivariable analysis was used to identify factors independently associated with hysterectomy. During an 8.5-year period, 346 cases of placenta previa were identified in 24,98
BACKGROUND: Antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) treatment is widely used for the prevention of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm infants. However, the efficacy and safety of ACS treatment remains controversial in twin pregnancies. AIMS: To investigate the effect of ACS therapy, single or multiple courses, on the incidence of neonatal RDS in singleton and twin pregnancies. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the pregnancy and neonatal outcomes of 450 singleton and 117 twin pregnancies d
Increased osteoclast activity is responsible for the enhanced bone destruction in postmenopausal osteoporosis, Paget's disease, bone metastasis, and hypercalcemia of malignancy. However, the number of known inhibitory factors that block osteoclast formation and bone resorption are limited. Therefore, we used an expression-cloning approach to identify novel factors produced by osteoclasts that inhibit osteoclast activity. A candidate clone was identified and isolated from a human osteoclast-like
Preterm birth (PTB) is one of the most common complications during pregnancy and it primarily accounts for neonatal mortality and numerous morbidities including long-term sequelae including cerebral palsy and developmental disability. The most effective treatment of PTB is prediction and prevention of its risks. Risk factors of PTB include history of PTB, short cervical length (CL), multiple pregnancies, ethnicity, smoking, uterine anomaly and history of curettage or cervical conization. Among t
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors associated with successful amniopatch treatment in patients with iatrogenic preterm premature rupture of membranes (iPPROM) or spontaneous PPROM (sPPROM) before 23 weeks' gestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study included 28 women who received amniopatch treatment due to iPPROM or sPPROM at 15-23 weeks' gestation. Patients' clinical characteristics before performing the amniopatch, factors associated with the procedure,
Our data implicate a possible association between gram-negative bacteria colonization and infertility treatment and suggest that maternal vaginal colonization may be associated with EONS of neonates in high-risk pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neonatal outcomes of twin pregnancies delivered at late-preterm versus term gestation based on chorionicity and indication for delivery. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study of women with twin pregnancies delivered at ≥34 weeks of gestation from 1995 to 2014. Subjects were categorized into two groups according to gestational age at delivery: late-preterm group (34-36 weeks) and term group (≥37 weeks). Neonatal outcome measures including neonatal intens
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of extracardiac anomalies (ECA) in prenatally diagnosed congenital heart diseases (CHD), and to provide more information for counseling of women with prenatally diagnosed fetal CHD. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 791 cases of fetal CHD diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound from January 2005 to April 2018. Associated ECAs included extracardiac structural malformation (ECM), chromosomal anomaly, and 22q11.2 microdeletion. CHD was classified in
Postpartum pubic symphysis diastasis (PPSD) refers to the separation of pubic symphysis after delivery. It is typically diagnosed based on clinical symptoms and radiologic findings. This study tried to assess clinical characteristics and risk factors of PPSD. This was a nested case-control study matched for year of delivery and gestational age at delivery using a retrospective cohort of women who delivered vaginally at a single institution. The incidence of PPSD was 0.156% (33/21,131). The incid
Myocyte enhancer binding factor 2 (MEF2) proteins belong to the MADS box family of transcription factors and four MEF2 proteins, MEF2A, MEF2B, MEF2C and MEF2D, have been found. MEF2 proteins have been shown to play critical roles in differentiation of muscles and neuronal tissues. How transactivational activity of MEF2 proteins is regulated is not fully understood. MEF2 proteins are activated by several kinases, including Erk5 and calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase, and interact with repressors
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neonatal outcome according to the gestational age at delivery and to determine the optimal timing for delivery in uncomplicated monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of women with uncomplicated twin pregnancies delivered at or beyond 35 weeks of gestation from 1995 to 2013. The primary outcome was neonatal composite morbidity, which was defined as when either one or both twins have one or more of the followings
