15There are limited data regarding whether mortality is higher in patients with non cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (bronchiectasis) than in those without bronchiectasis. Using 2005-2015 data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, we evaluated hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality in the bronchiectasis cohort relative to the matched cohort. The effect of comorbidities over the study period on the relative mortality was also assessed. All-cause mortality was significantly higher in t
Acute eosinophilic pneumonia is a severe and rapidly progressive lung disease that can cause fatal respiratory failure. Since this disease exhibits totally different clinical features to other eosinophilic lung diseases (ELD), it is not difficult to distinguish it among other ELDs. However, this can be similar to other diseases causing acute respiratory distress syndrome or severe community-acquired pneumonia, so the diagnosis can be delayed. The cause of this disease in the majority of patients
These findings suggest that in healthy subjects without asthma, obesity/adiposity has no significant effect on eosinophilic airway inflammation and that hormones and systemic inflammation derived from adipose tissue do not affect eosinophilic airway inflammation.
Despite widespread use of the interferon-gamma release assay for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), the initiation rate of and factors associated with LTBI treatment among healthcare workers (HCWs) have not been studied in depth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the initiation rate of LTBI treatment and also to identify any factors associated with non-initiation of LTBI treatment among HCWs. A retrospective cohort study of 293 HCWs with LTBI was performed at a teaching h
BACKGROUND: There are few data available about hardcore smokers and their behavioral characteristics among the lung cancer screening (LCS) population. The study investigated the burden of hardcore smokers within the LCS population, and determine the characteristics of hardcore smokers using nationally representative data in South Korea. METHODS: We used data from 2007 to 2012 from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This study enrolled current male smokers aged 55-74 yea
Background : The prevalence of tuberculosis is slowly decreasing in Korea. However, the drug-resistance of pulmonary tuberculosis is a major risk factor of treatment failure. Moreover, the National Surveillance System has recently been discontinued. Therefore, a continuous survey is necessary for the exact detection of the rate of drug resistance. We studied the recent 4-year drug resistance rate of tuberculosis at a single University hospital in Seoul.Materials and Methods : The study included
Introduction Although respiratory infections are common causes of acute respiratory failure (ARF) in patients with myositis-interstitial lung disease (ILD), limited data are available regarding the treatment outcomes by the etiologies of acute exacerbation (AE) of myositis-related ILD (infectious vs. non-infectious). Our study aimed to investigate the treatment outcomes of AE in patients with myositis-related ILD focused on the infectious etiology. Methods A single center-based retrospective coh
Care of patients with sepsis has improved over the last decade. However, in the recent two years, there was no significant progress in the development of a new drug for critically ill patients. In January 2011, it was announced that the worldwide phase 3 randomized trial of a novel anti-Toll-like receptor-4 compound, eritoran tetrasodium, had failed to demonstrate an improvement in the mortality of patients with severe sepsis. In October 2011, Xigris (drotrecogin alfa, a recombinant activated pr
Hepatoma has a tendency to spread into the venous system, but intracavitary cardiac extension or metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma is an uncommon form of cardiac malignancy. When the carcinoma grows from the hepatic vein into the right atrium, the right atrial tumor thrombis may hinder the blood flow. Therefore, these patients have the risk of sudden death. In the past, antemortem diagnosis of right atrial tumor thrombi in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma was difficult. But, e
BACKGROUND: Since the late 1960s, mechanical ventilation has been accomplished primarily using volume controlled ventilation(VCV). While VCV allows a set tidal volume to be guaranteed, VCV could bring about excessive airway pressures that may be lead to barotrauma in the patients with acute lung injury. With the increment of knowledge related to ventilator-induced lung injury, pressure controlled ventilation(PCV) has been frequenfly applied to these patients. But, PCV has a disadvantage of varia

Background : The effect of PEEP(ed note: Define PEEP.) on the lung volume in patients with auto-PEEP during mechanical ventilation is not even. In patients with an expiratory limitation such as COPD, a PEEP of 85% from an auto-PEEP can be used with minimal increase in the lung volume. However, the application of PEEP to patients without an expiratory flow limitation can result in progressive lung. This study was carried out to evaluate the different PEEP effects on the lung volume according to t
