Widening of the safe trajectory range during subaxial cervical pedicle screw placement: advantages of a curved pedicle probe and laterally located starting point without creating a funnel-shaped hole

SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery SpineOA

OBJECTIVE The small diameter of cervical pedicles and a large transverse cervical pedicle angle are challenges that have led spinal surgeons to investigate how they could achieve a wider safety trajectory and reduce the insertion angle during cervical pedicle screw (CPS) placement. In this paper, the authors detail the advantages of using a curved pedicle probe and a laterally located entry point for overcoming these challenges. METHODS From March 2012 to May 2016, the authors performed posterio

Curcumin as a Promising Neuroprotective Agent for the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury: A Review of the Literature
Subum Lee, Dae-Chul Cho, Inbo Han, Kyoung‐Tae Kim
SJR Q1NeurospineOA

Curcumin is a polyphenolic chemical derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa. It has been used throughout the Indian subcontinent for medicinal purposes, religious events, and regional cuisine. It has various pharmacological benefits owing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Its neuroprotective effects on the brain and peripheral nerves have been demonstrated in several in vivo neuronal tissue studies. Because of these functional properties of curcumin, it is considered to hav

SJR Q1Spine

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare cervical sagittal alignment after posterior fusion surgery with lateral mass screw (LMS) and cervical pedicle screw (CPS) fixation. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: LMS fixation in the subaxial cervical spine has become the preferred method of posterior cervical fusion. Although CPS has biomechanical benefits, it also has neurovascular risks. Few studies to date have compared sagittal alignment changes afte

tEMG is an essential adjunctive surgical tool for deciding on and planning for rootlet resection. If the tEMG finding is negative, complete resection, involving the rootlet, may be safe. The accuracy may be further improved by using a combination of tEMG and IOM.

Reliability of Early Ambulation after Intradural Spine Surgery : Risk Factors and a Preventive Method for Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Related Complications
Subum Lee, Dae-Chul Cho, Kyoung‐Tae Kim, Young‐Seok Lee, Seung Chul Rhim, Jin Hoon Park
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

OBJECTIVE: Cerebrospinal fluid leakage related complications (CLC) occasionally occur after intradural spinal surgery. We sought to investigate the effectiveness of early ambulation after intradural spinal surgery and analyze the risk factors for CLC. METHODS: For this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled 314 patients who underwent intradural spinal surgery at a single institution. The early group contained 79 patients who started ambulation after 1 day of bedrest without position restriction

Postoperative Non-Pathological Fever Following Posterior Cervical Fusion Surgery : Is Laminoplasty a Better Preventive Method than Laminectomy?
Subum Lee, Sang Ku Jung, Hong Bum Kim, Sung Woo Roh, Sang Ryong Jeon, Jin Hoon Park
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

Patients who develop delayed fever 4 days after posterior cervical fusion surgery using CPS are more likely to have non-pathologic fever than surgical site infection. Laminectomy is a significant risk factor for non-pathologic fever.

Minimally Invasive Cervical Pedicle Screw Placement With a Freehand Technique Through the Posterolateral Approach Using a Tubular Retractor: A Technical Note
Subum Lee, Jin Hoon Park
SJR Q2Operative Neurosurgery

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Although many studies have demonstrated the biomechanical superiority of cervical pedicle screw (CPS) placement with sufficient safety and accuracy, it also has an inevitable major drawback in that an extensive posterior neck muscle dissection results in immediate postoperative neck pain. To avoid this disadvantage and highlight the several biomechanical advantages of CPS, we conducted the first minimally invasive surgery using both a tubular retractor through the post

SJR Q3MedicineOA

The purpose of this study was to identify the criteria for atlantoaxial (AA) fusion by comparing follow-up lateral radiographs and computed tomography (CT) images. We retrospectively analyzed data from 161 consecutive patients undergoing AA fusion. Patients with a minimum of 1 year of CT follow-up after AA fusion surgery using C2 pedicle screws or translaminar screws (C2TLS) were included. Patients were followed up radiographically at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, and dynamic lateral radiog

Current Concepts in the Treatment of Traumatic C2 Vertebral Fracture : A Literature Review

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

The integrity of the high cervical spine, the transition zone from the brainstem to the spinal cord, is crucial for survival and daily life. The region protects the enclosed neurovascular structure and allows a substantial portion of the head motion. Injuries of the high cervical spine are frequent, and the fractures of the C2 vertebra account for approximately 17-25% of acute cervical fractures. We review the two major types of C2 vertebral fractures, odontoid fracture and Hangman's fracture. F

Effect of teriparatide on drug treatment of tuberculous spondylitis: an experimental study

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Tuberculous spondylitis often develops catastrophic bone destruction with uncontrolled inflammation. Because anti-tuberculous drugs do not have a role in bone formation, a combination drug therapy with a bone anabolic agent could help in fracture prevention and promote bone reconstruction. This study aimed to investigate the influence of teriparatide on the effect of anti-tuberculous drugs in tuberculous spondylitis treatment. We used the virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) H37Rv strain. F

Comparison between Anterior Cervical Decompression with Fusion and Posterior Cervical Fusion with Wide Facetectomy for Treatment of Severe Bony Foraminal Stenosis

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

In the treatment of parallel-shaped bony FS up to two surgical levels, segmental angle improvement was more favorable in patients who underwent ACDF. However, PCF with wide facetectomy using CPS should be considered as an alternative treatment option in cases where the anterior approach is burdensome.

Conservative Treatment with Teriparatide Versus Vertebroplasty for Acute Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures: A Meta-Analysis
Subum Lee, Junseok W. Hur, Younggyu Oh, Sungjae An, Yeongu Chung, Danbi Park, Jin Hoon Park
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Background/Objectives: The debate continues, despite numerous studies, on whether vertebroplasty (VP) or conservative treatment is more suitable for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). Meanwhile, teriparatide (TP) has shown promise in accelerating bone healing in OVCFs. This analysis aims to clarify the potential benefits of conservative treatment using TP over VP from several clinical studies on acute OVCFs. Methods: A literature search was performed, using the MEDLINE, Embase
