Statins, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors could be associated with the risk reduction of colorectal cancer. We previously demonstrated that simvastatin inhibits NF-kappaB signaling in human intestinal epithelial cells and ameliorates acute murine colitis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of simvastatin on the apoptotic pathways related to NF-kappaB signaling in colon cancer cells, and on anticancer effects in 2 different animal models. We treated cell lines (COLO 205 and HCT 116) wit

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: The risk of bleeding after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with early gastric neoplasms who do not discontinue aspirin for the procedure has not been established. We aimed to investigate whether post-ESD gastric bleeding is increased in patients who take aspirin. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent ESD for early gastric neoplasms at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Korea, between November 2008 and January 2011 were enrolled. The risk of p

Abstract Purpose: Lauren diffuse-type gastric adenocarcinomas (DGAs) are generally genomically stable. We identified lysine (K)-specific methyltransferase 2C (KMT2C) as a frequently mutated gene and examined its role in DGA progression. Experimental Design: We performed whole exome sequencing on tumor samples of 27 patients with DGA who underwent gastrectomy. Lysine (K)-specific methyltransferase 2C (KMT2C) was analyzed in DGA cell lines and in patient tumors. Results: KMT2C was the most frequen

SJR Q1Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics

BACKGROUND: Operative link on gastritis assessment (OLGA) and Operative link on gastric intestinal metaplasia assessment (OLGIM) staging systems have been proposed for gastric cancer (GC) risk estimation. AIM: To validate the OLGA and OLGIM staging systems in a region with high risk of GC. METHODS: This retrospective study included 474 GC patients and age- and sex-matched health screening control persons in a cancer centre hospital. We classified gastritis patterns according to the OLGA and OLGI

SJR Q1Endoscopy

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Therapeutic guidelines have not yet been established for low-grade gastric adenomas/dysplasias (LGD), which have a low risk of progression to high-grade adenomas/dysplasias (HGD) or to invasive carcinomas. This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for HGD/carcinoma that indicate a need for resection in biopsy-proven LGD lesions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 236 LGD lesions from 208 consecutive patients treated with endoscopic resection (ER) were retrospectively studied be

Do young hepatocellular carcinoma patients with relatively good liver function have poorer outcomes than elderly patients?
Soo‐Jeong Cho, Jung‐Hwan Yoon, Seung‐Sik Hwang, Hyo‐Suk Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is known to be age dependent; the influence of age on prognosis is, however, controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the tumor characteristics and survival rates of young and old HCC patients, with respect to tumor stage. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical data and survival times of 71 young HCC patients from 1987 to 2003 and compared these with those of their older counterparts (n = 239). Patients were categorized into th

BACKGROUND: Metformin use has been associated with a decreased incidence and mortality of various cancers. AIM: To evaluate the association between metformin use and gastric cancer. METHODS: We randomly selected 100 000 type 2 diabetic patients from the 2004 Korean National Health Insurance claim database, and assessed gastric cancer incidence among 39 989 patients (aged 30-97 years) who were regularly treated with anti-diabetic drugs and followed-up from 2004 to 2010. In total, 26 690 patients

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in gastric cancer progression and metastasis. This study investigated the role of miRNA-135a in early gastric cancer (EGC) including lymph node (LN) metastasis. We examined the correlation between miRNA-135a expression and clinical outcomes in 59 patients who underwent surgery for EGC. Using gastric cancer cell lines, we performed functional and target gene analyses. miRNA-135a expression was down-regulated in 33.9% of patients. These patients showed a sig

The bacterial diversity of the bovine rumen was examined using a PCR-based approach. 16S rDNA sequences were amplified and cloned from three fractions of rumen (solid, fluid, and epithelium) that are likely to represent different bacterial niches. A total of 113 clones were sequenced, and similarities to known l6S rDNA sequences were examined. About of the sequences had similarity to 16S rDNA database sequences. Furthermore, about of the sequences were similar to 16S rDNA database sequences. For

Peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor γ upregulates galectin‐9 and predicts prognosis in intestinal‐type gastric cancer

SJR Q1International Journal of Cancer

The importance of PPARγ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ) in gastric cancer (GC) is unclear. We investigated the role of PPARγ in GC cell lines and an animal model, and its prognostic significance of PPARγ in GC patients. We controlled PPARγ and galectin-9 expression by using siRNAs and lentiviral constructs. Interaction between PPARγ and galectin-9 was evaluated using luciferase and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. PPARγ expression in GCs was determined by immunohistochemical

Abstract Intestinal-type gastric cancer often results from Helicobacter pylori infection through intestinal metaplasia, a transdifferentiated premalignant phenotype. Because H. pylori virulence factor CagA has been associated with aberrant expression of the transcription factor CDX1, which regulates intestinal differentiation, we explored its relationship with H. pylori infection and function during gastric carcinogenesis in normal gastric epithelial cells and gastric cancer cell lines.
