Early childhood bilingualism leads to advances in executive attention: Dissociating culture and language
Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust
SJR Q1Bilingualism Language and CognitionOA

This study investigated whether early especially efficient utilization of executive functioning in young bilinguals would transcend potential cultural benefits. To dissociate potential cultural effects from bilingualism, four-year-old U.S. Korean–English bilingual children were compared to three monolingual groups – English and Korean monolinguals in the U.S.A. and another Korean monolingual group, in Korea. Overall, bilinguals were most accurate and fastest among all groups. The bilingual advan

Effects of Social Media and Smartphone Use on Body Esteem in Female Adolescents: Testing a Cognitive and Affective Model
Hwajin Yang, Joy Jiaqi Wang, Germaine Y. Q. Tng, Sujin Yang
SJR Q2ChildrenOA

We examined the predictive relations of social media and smartphone use to body esteem in female adolescents and the mechanism that underlies these relations. As a result of frequent social media and smartphone use, adolescents are continually exposed to appearance-related media content. This likely reinforces a thin ideal and fosters appearance-based comparison and increases fear of external evaluation. Hence, we investigated a cognitive-affective framework in which the associations of social m

SJR Q3Clinical Neuropharmacology

Our findings indicate that a patient's attitude toward medication is associated with neurocognitive function. Specifically, verbal learning memory, executive functioning, and sustained attention were associated with attitude toward medication.

The 5-HT2 Receptor Profiles of Antipsychotics in the Pathogenesis of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Schizophrenia

SJR Q3Clinical Neuropharmacology

Atypical antipsychotics have been reported to induce or exacerbate obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in patients with schizophrenia. We report the development of de novo obsession induced by sequential treatment with risperidone, aripiprazole, and ziprasidone, which have an antagonist effect on serotonin 5-HT(2A) receptors in a patient with schizophrenia. The obsession was repeatedly improved after switching the atypical antipsychotics to amisulpride, a selective D(2) and D(3) receptor antagon

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the prevalence and correlates of disturbed eating attitudes and behaviors in South Korean students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, 2,226 fourth and seventh grade students filled out questionnaires on eating attitudes and behaviors (Eating Attitude Test -26, EAT-26), coping strategies, fear of being overweight, behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. RESULTS: Disturbed eating attitudes and behaviors were found in 7

Inconsistent Media Mediation and Problematic Smartphone Use in Preschoolers: Maternal Conflict Resolution Styles as Moderators
Hwajin Yang, Wee Qin Ng, Yingjia Yang, Sujin Yang
SJR Q2ChildrenOA

Previous studies suggest that inconsistent parenting leads to undesired consequences, such as a child's defiant reactance or parent-child conflicts. In light of this, we examined whether mothers' inconsistent smartphone mediation strategies would influence their children's problematic smartphone use during early childhood. Furthermore, given that harsh parenting often escalates a child's behavioral problems, we focused on parent-child conflict resolution tactics as moderators. One hundred fifty-

Multidimensional Profiles of Addictive Smartphone Use: A Latent Profile Analysis
Hwajin Yang, Germaine Y. Q. Tng, Shuna Shiann Khoo, Sujin Yang
SJR Q1Current PsychologyOA

Abstract Given that crucial psychological attributes of smartphone addiction have been studied in isolation from each other, we examined latent profiles of emotional distress (depression, stress, loneliness, and fear of missing out; i.e., FoMO); protective traits (self-control, mindfulness, grit); the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and approach system (BAS; drive, reward responsiveness, and fun seeking) in relation to addictive smartphone use. We identified three distinctive profiles, using

The effects of script variation, literacy skills, and immersion experience on executive attention: A comparison of matched monoscriptal and biscriptal bilinguals
Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Andree Hartanto
SJR Q1Bilingualism Language and Cognition

To examine script effects, monoscriptal Spanish–English (SE) bilinguals, who use two similar Roman alphabetic systems, were compared to biscriptal Chinese–English (CE) bilinguals, who use logographs and Roman alphabets. On the Attention Network Test, script effects were most evident in global processing efficiency (i.e., inverse efficiency and reaction time) and in the local network of executive control in favor of biscriptal CE bilinguals over matched monoscriptal SE counterparts. Literacy effe
