Abstract. Accurate accounting of emissions and removals of CO2 is critical for the planning and verification of emission reduction targets in support of the Paris Agreement. Here, we present a pilot dataset of country-specific net carbon exchange (NCE; fossil plus terrestrial ecosystem fluxes) and terrestrial carbon stock changes aimed at informing countries' carbon budgets. These estimates are based on “top-down” NCE outputs from the v10 Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO-2) modeling intercompari

, we find a 13.4% decrease in mean carbon residence time (50% confidence range = 9.2 to 17.6%) in North Slope tundra ecosystems during the past four decades, suggesting a transition toward a boreal carbon cycling regime. Temperature dependencies of respiration and carbon uptake suggest that increases in cold season Arctic labile carbon release will likely continue to exceed increases in net growing season carbon uptake under continued warming trends.

Influence of winter precipitation on spring phenology in boreal forests

SJR Q1Global Change Biology

Understanding the variations in spring vegetation phenology associated with preseason climate conditions can significantly improve our knowledge on ecosystem dynamics and biosphere-atmosphere interactions. Recent studies have shown that wet winters can delay the start date of the vegetation growing season (SOS) in the high latitudes. However, associated underlying mechanisms remain unclear due to the lack of observation sites as well as complex interactions between various climate and ecosystem

Accelerated rate of vegetation green‐up related to warming at northern high latitudes
Hoonyoung Park, Sujong Jeong, Josep Peñuelas
SJR Q1Global Change Biology

Abstract Mid‐ to high‐latitude vegetation are experiencing changes in their seasonal cycles as a result of climate change. Although the rates of seasonal growth from winter dormancy to summer maturity have accelerated because of changes in environmental conditions, less attention has been paid to the rate of vegetation green‐up (RVG) and its dynamics, which could advance vegetation maturity. We analyzed the long‐term changes in RVG and the drivers at high northern latitudes for 35 years (1982–20

The seasonal greening of Northern Hemisphere (NH) ecosystems, due to extended growing periods and enhanced photosynthetic activity, could modify near-surface warming by perturbing land-atmosphere energy exchanges, yet this biophysical control on warming seasonality is underexplored. By performing experiments with a coupled land-atmosphere model, here we show that summer greening effectively dampens NH warming by -0.15 ± 0.03 °C for 1982-2014 due to enhanced evapotranspiration. However, greening

Abstract. In this study, an extension on the previously reported status of the COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network's (COCCON) calibration procedures incorporating refined methods is presented. COCCON is a global network of portable Bruker EM27/SUN FTIR spectrometers for deriving column-averaged atmospheric abundances of greenhouse gases. The original laboratory open-path lamp measurements for deriving the instrumental line shape (ILS) of the spectrometer from water vapour lines have be

Abstract The production of tea ( Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze), the world’s second most consumed beverage, is susceptible to extreme weather events. However, our understanding about the impacts of extreme temperatures and climate change on tea yields remains fairly limited. Here we quantify the historical and predict future fluctuations in tea yield caused by extreme temperatures in China, the largest tea producing country. We found that both heat and cold extremes were associated with signific

Leaf area index in Earth system models: how the key variable of vegetation seasonality works in climate projections
Hoonyoung Park, Sujong Jeong
SJR Q1Environmental Research LettersOA

Abstract Earth system models (ESMs) are widely used in scientific research to understand the responses of various components of Earth systems to natural and anthropogenic forcings. ESMs embody terrestrial ecosystems on the basis of the leaf area index (LAI) to formulate various interactions between the land surface and atmosphere. Here, we evaluated the LAI seasonality of deciduous forests simulated by 14 ESMs participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and CMIP6 t

Abstract Degradation in air quality could be a potential factor for decreasing solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation. However, our understandings of the potential of airborne particulate matter (PM) to reduce actual solar PV power generation remain unclear. This study quantifies attenuation impacts of airborne PM on solar PV power generation on cloudless days at Yeongam and Eunpyeong-gu power plants installed in the Republic of Korea. Urbanization has stronger impacts than regional climate change on wind stilling: a lesson from South Korea

SJR Q1Environmental Research LettersOA

Abstract Wind stilling has been observed in many regions across the Northern Hemisphere; however, the related mechanisms are not well understood. Analyses of the wind speed variations in South Korea during 1993–2015 in this study reveal that the annual-mean surface wind speeds at rural stations have increased by up to 0.41 m s −1 decade −1 , while those at urban stations have decreased by up to −0.63 m s −1 decade −1 . The local wind speed variations are found to be negatively correlated with th
