15BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is known to have good prognosis, patients often manifest neuropsychological impairments. This study aimed to investigate cognitive dysfunctions and their relationship with white matter microstructural changes in BECTS patients. METHODS: Nineteen BECTS and 25 normal subjects aged 7-16 years were included. Neuropsychological performances were assessed by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children III, e
For the endovascular treatment of dissecting aneurysms in the distal PICA segments, we recommend occlusion of both the dissecting aneurysm and the parent artery to avoid leaving the point of initial intimal tear untreated. All of our patients had excellent clinical outcomes; however, our experience with recanalization illustrates the need for close follow-up of patients.
The filum terminale is an anatomic structure at the end of the spinal cord. Only a few cases of AVFs of the filum terminale have been reported. These AVFs usually consist of a single communication between the anterior spinal artery and a single draining vein. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and radiologic features and treatment of 4 patients with spinal AVFs of the filum terminale. Clinical manifestations and MR images are similar to those of spinal dural AVFs. All patients underwent su
Brain network is organized to maximize the efficiency of both segregated and integrated information processing that may be related to human intelligence. However, there have been surprisingly few studies that focus on the topological characteristics of brain network underlying extremely high intelligence that is intellectual giftedness, particularly in adolescents. Here, we examined the network topology in 25 adolescents with superior intelligence (SI-Adol), 25 adolescents with average intellige
In animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD), 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is one of the most widely used agents that damages the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway. However, brain structural changes in response to MPTP remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate in vivo longitudinal changes in gray matter (GM) volume and white matter (WM) microstructure in primate models administered with MPTP. In six cynomolgus monkeys, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI
SUMMARY: Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are rare vascular malformations in the spinal dura, fed by dural branches of the radicular arteries, and drain primarily into intradural venous plexuses. They may cause elevated medullary venous pressure and produce a progressive myelopathy. We describe a case of AVF in the epidural space of the previous surgery site of L3 and it showed a unique complex venous pathway into the perimedullary vein, leading to classic clinical symptoms of venous c
A young male patient who presented with steroid-responsive parkinsonism, hemiplegia, thrombocytopaenia and systemic illness who was subsequently diagnosed to have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is described. He later developed post-hemiplegic dystonia. Thalamic lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are demonstrated. Clinical features and neuropathology of central nervous system lupus are discussed. This is the first report of SLE presenting with Parkinsonism, and the first to demonstra
BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] might have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. We investigated the effects of olmesartan on the changes in serum ACE2 and Ang-(1-7) levels as well as kidney and vascular function in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, active comparator-controlled trial. Eighty participants with type 2 diabetes and hypertension were
Localized (1)H-MRS revealed abnormal metabolic change in both hemispheres of children with moyamoya disease. Because of its non-invasive nature, (1)H-MRS is potentially useful for the preoperative evaluation of metabolic abnormalities and their postoperative monitoring.
We experienced rare combination of multiple irregular shaped aneurysms along the course of the feeding artery and arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the posterior circulation. We could not explain which aneurysm was a cause of bleeding because all the aneurysms showed irregular in shape like pseudoaneurysms and location of the aneurysms was very close each other. We report two cases in which multiple irregular shaped aneurysms were related with AVMs and first episode of hemorrhage.
Purpose : Hemangiopericytoma(HP) exhibits its pathologic findings different from those of meningioma or oth-erangiomatous tumor; and its clinical behavior is unique and prognosis worse than other cases. We reviewed the CT,MR and angiographic findings of HPs and evaluated differential radiologic points of comparison be-tween typicalmeningiomas and meningeal HPs. Materials and Methods: MR(n=16), CT(n=5) and angiographic imaging(n=10) wereperformed in 18 pa-tients(M:F=12:6, mean age:45 years) with
