BACKGROUND: Deep sequencing techniques provide a remarkable opportunity for comprehensive understanding of tumorigenesis at the molecular level. As omics studies become popular, integrative approaches need to be developed to move from a simple cataloguing of mutations and changes in gene expression to dissecting the molecular nature of carcinogenesis at the systemic level and understanding the complex networks that lead to cancer development. RESULTS: Here, we describe a high-throughput, multi-d

Cut-off points between pain intensities of the postoperative pain using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves
Sooyoung Cho, Youn Jin Kim, Minjin Lee, Jae Hee Woo, Hyun Jung Lee
SJR Q1BMC AnesthesiologyOA

BACKGROUND: Pain assessment and management are important in postoperative circumstances as overdosing of opioids can induce respiratory depression and critical consequences. We aimed this study to check the reliability of commonly used pain scales in a postoperative setting among Korean adults. We also intended to determine cut-off points of pain scores between mild and moderate pain and between moderate and severe pain by which can help to decide to use pain medication. METHODS: A total of 180

Postoperative analgesic effects of ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane block for open appendectomy
Sooyoung Cho, Youn-Jin Kim, Dong‐Yeon Kim, Soon-Sup Chung
Journal of the Korean Surgical SocietyOA

PURPOSE: Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is a newly developed and effective peripheral block involving the nerves of the anterior abdominal wall for lower abdominal surgery. We evaluated the postoperative analgesic efficacy of ultrasound-guided TAP block using 20 mL of 0.5% levobupivacaine in patients undergoing open appendectomy. METHODS: Forty-four patients undergoing appendectomy were assigned either to undergo a right sided-TAP block (group I, n = 22), or to receive standard care (gr

For pediatric patients who require surgery and have a recent history of URI, procedures should be performed after a URI symptom-free period of at least 1-2 weeks. Confirming the absence of abnormalities in preoperative chest images can reduce the incidence of perioperative RAEs.

SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

BACKGROUND: We conducted prospective, randomized, observer-blinded trial to compare two double-injection perivascular (PV) ultrasound-guided techniques of axillary brachial plexus block (BPB). METHODS: American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II, 50 patients undergoing surgery of the forearm, wrist or hand were randomly allocated to two groups. For PV12 group, injection was carried out at the 12 o'clock position using 24 ml of 2% lidocaine. Patients of PV6 group got their injectio

Factors Affecting Maternal and Fetal Outcomes of Non-Obstetric Surgery and Anesthesia during Pregnancy: a Retrospective Review of Data at a Single Tertiary University Hospital
Sooyoung Cho, Rack Kyung Chung, So Hee Jin
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia during pregnancy for non-obstetric surgery is generally known to have a negative impact on maternal and fetal outcomes. We assessed the risk of adverse outcomes in fetuses and mothers associated with non-obstetric surgery. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed clinical data on pregnant women who received non-obstetric surgeries at a tertiary university hospital. We reviewed maternity admissions using hospital administrative data during the last 16 years. The outcome a

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

BACKGROUND: Protective mechanical ventilation using low tidal volume has been introduced to surgical patients to reduce the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications. We investigated the effects of protective ventilation (PV) techniques on anesthesia-induced atelectasis identified via lung ultrasonography in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. METHODS: A total of 42 adult patients who were scheduled for open abdominal surgery with an expected duration > 2 hours were included in the s

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

PURPOSE: We compared three methods of ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus block, which were single, and double perivascular (PV) infiltration techniques, and a perineural (PN) injection technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 78 patients of American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II undergoing surgery of the forearm, wrist, or hand were randomly allocated to three groups. 2% lidocaine with epinephrine 5 μg/mL was used. Sacral insufficiency fracture resulting from a metastatic tumor or an osteoporotic fracture causes severe low back pain and radiating pain mass effect on neural foramen and chemical irritants. Percutaneous sacroplasty is one of the effective treatment modalities for sacral insufficiency fracture and its pain. Because of the structural complexity of the sacrum, obtaining an epidurogram of the S1 and S2 nerve roots before the start of the procedure can be helpful to avoid nerve injury. We present

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the appropriate target concentrations at the effect site of propofol and remifentanil when deep sedation was achieved by monitored anesthesia care (MAC) anesthesia and related respiratory depression during vein stripping surgery for varicose veins. METHODS: In total, 51 adult patients who were scheduled for varicose vein stripping surgery were sedated with propofol and remifentanil during the surgery, after administration of midazolam.
