SJR Q1Group & Organization Management

Although empowering leadership is generally considered to be a desirable leadership approach, its effectiveness has been questioned and the response is mixed. Integrating the “Too-Much-of-a-Good-Thing” effect and dual task processing, this study examines the relationship between empowering leadership and task performance. Specifically, we suggest a curvilinear relationship between empowering leadership and employee task performance. Further, applying a leadership contingency perspective, we prop

SJR Q2Psychological Reports

Based on social exchange theory, this study examines the influence of leaders' trusting behavior and competence in in-role activities on members' perceived leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships. Our study proposes that a leader's trust in a member contributes to the member's perceived LMX, and that the leader's competence in in-role activities moderates this relationship. Furthermore, our study suggests that perceived LMX mediates the relationship between the leader's trust and members' tas

Soojin Lee, Seckyoung Loretta Kim, Eun Kyung Park, Seokhwa Yun
SJR Q2Psychological Reports

With an increase of female workforce and dual-earner families, work-family conflict has received particular attention. Using a sample of 159 employees in South Korea, this study examined whether work-family conflict mediated the relationship between social support and emotional exhaustion. Supervisor and family support were found to be related negatively to two different aspects of work-family conflict, i.e., work interference with family and family interference with work, respectively. Also, ea

SJR Q1Mathematical Thinking and Learning

This qualitative study considers middle grades mathematics teachers' reasoning about drawn representations of fractions and decimals. We analyzed teachers' strategies based on their response to multiple-choice tasks that required analysis of drawn representations. We found that teachers' flexibility with referent units played a significant role in understanding drawn representations with fractions and decimals. Teachers who could correctly identify or flexibly use the referent unit could better

The Trickle-Down Effect of Abusive Supervision: The Moderating Effects of Supervisors’ Task Performance and Employee Promotion Focus
Seckyoung Loretta Kim, Soojin Lee, Seokhwa Yun
SJR Q1Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies

Drawing on both social learning theory and conservation of resources theory, our research examines the trickle-down effect of abusive supervision across three hierarchical levels: managers, supervisors, and employees. Specifically, we investigate the positive relationship between abusive manager behavior and emotional exhaustion through abusive supervisor behavior. In addition, we explore supervisor task performance as a situational factor and employee promotion focus as an individual factor in

Sustaining Collaborative Effort in Work Teams: Exchange Ideology and Employee Social Loafing
Gukdo Byun, Soojin Lee, Steven J. Karau, Ye Dai
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

To sustain the effort of work team members as a collaborative resource over time, organizations need to avoid the social loafing of employees. Recognizing the importance of this relationship, we investigated both individual (i.e., exchange ideology) and situational factors (i.e., task visibility and professional respect) that influence employees’ attitudes toward social exchange and team collaboration and thus their social loafing. Using survey responses of 223 employee–supervisor dyads in South
