SJR Q1Clinical Cancer ResearchOA

PURPOSE: To evaluate the expression of stem cell-related markers at the cellular level in human breast tumors of different subtypes and histologic stage. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We performed immunohistochemical analyses of 12 proteins [CD44, CD24, ALDH1, vimentin, osteonectin, EPCR, caveolin 1, connexin 43, cytokeratin 18 (CK18), MUC1, claudin 7, and GATA3] selected based on their differential expression in breast cancer cells with more differentiated and stem cell-like characteristics in 47 cases

BACKGROUND: Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are known to be associated with response to primary systemic therapy (PST) in breast cancer. This study was conducted to assess the association of TIL subsets with pathological complete response (pCR) after PST in breast cancer in relation to breast cancer subtype, breast cancer stem cell (BCSC) phenotype and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). METHODS: The pre-chemotherapeutic biopsy specimens of 153 breast cancer patients who underwent su

Cellular and genetic diversity in the progression of in situ human breast carcinomas to an invasive phenotype

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical InvestigationOA

Intratumor genetic heterogeneity is a key mechanism underlying tumor progression and therapeutic resistance. The prevailing model for explaining intratumor diversity, the clonal evolution model, has recently been challenged by proponents of the cancer stem cell hypothesis. To investigate this issue, we performed combined analyses of markers associated with cellular differentiation states and genotypic alterations in human breast carcinomas and evaluated diversity with ecological and evolutionary

BACKGROUND: The cancer stem cell (CSC) hypothesis has important clinical implications for cancer therapeutics because of the proposed role of CSCs in chemoresistance. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the CSC populations before and after primary systemic therapy (PST) and their prognostic role in human breast cancer. METHODS: Paired samples (before and after PST) of breast cancer tissue were obtained from clinical stage II or III patients (n=92) undergoing PST with the regimen

BACKGROUND: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is overexpressed in a subset of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancers, and coexpression of HER2 and EGFR has been reported to be associated with poor clinical outcome. Moreover, interaction between HER2 and EGFR has been suggested to be a possible basis for trastuzumab resistance. METHODS: We analysed the clinical significance of EGFR overexpression and EGFR gene copy number alterations in 242 HER2-positive pri

Prognostic Value of Tumor-Associated Macrophages According to Histologic Locations and Hormone Receptor Status in Breast Cancer
Jae Moon Gwak, Min Hye Jang, Dong Il Kim, An Na Seo, So Yeon Park
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are involved in tumor progression by promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), tumor cell invasion, migration and angiogenesis. However, in breast cancer, the clinical relevance of the TAM infiltration according to distinct histologic locations (intratumoral vs. stromal) and hormone receptor status is unclear. We investigated the significance of the levels of TAM infiltration in distinct histologic locations in invasive breast cancer. We also examined

Analysis of differential BRAFV600E mutational status in multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma
So Yeon Park, Young Joo Park, Yu Jin Lee, Hyun Sook Lee, Sung Hee Choi, Gheeyoung Choe, Hak Chul Jang, Seong Hoe Park, Do Joon Park, Bo Youn Cho
SJR Q1Cancer

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid cancers often occur as multiple foci. Multifocal cancers have been considered to have a poor prognosis because they are thought to be the consequence of intrathyroidal spread of the papillary cancer. However, to the authors' knowledge there has been little investigation into whether multifocal thyroid papillary carcinomas arise from the intrathyroidal spread of a single carcinoma or from independent primary tumors. To answer this question, the BRAF(V600E) mutational

Alu and LINE-1 Hypomethylation Is Associated with HER2 Enriched Subtype of Breast Cancer
So Yeon Park, An Na Seo, Hae Yoen Jung, Jae Moon Gwak, Namgee Jung, Nam-Yun Cho, Gyeong Hoon Kang
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The changes in DNA methylation status in cancer cells are characterized by hypermethylation of promoter CpG islands and diffuse genomic hypomethylation. Alu and long interspersed nucleotide element-1 (LINE-1) are non-coding genomic repetitive sequences and methylation of these elements can be used as a surrogate marker for genome-wide methylation status. This study was designed to evaluate the changes of Alu and LINE-1 hypomethylation during breast cancer progression from normal to pre-invasive

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical Pathology

AIM: To investigate the effect of polysomy 17 on HER-2 status as evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC), dual-colour fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) and chromogenic in situ hybridisation (CISH). METHODS: Dual-probe FISH and single-probe CISH were performed to detect HER-2 gene amplification, and IHC to detect HER-2 expression, on 309 invasive breast cancers. RESULTS: Polysomy 17 was detected in 32.0% of the total number of breast cancers; it was detected in 12.3% of the IHC 0 or 1+ ca
