연구실 소개
김석환 교수의 연구실은 천체물리학과 광학 공학을 융합한 고성능 천체망원경 및 광학소자 개발을 핵심으로 합니다. 특히 우주에서의 우주망원경 운영과 관련된 극초음파장(UV) 관측, 대규모 천체망원경의 정밀 광학 가공 및 측정 기술, 그리고 현장에서의 정밀 정렬 알고리즘 개발에 중점을 두고 있습니다. 연구는 천체의 기원과 진화를 밝히는 데 기여하는 고감도 UV 관측과 함께, 대형 광학 부품의 정밀 가공 및 측정 기술 개발을 통해 천문학적 관측의 정밀도를 극대화하고자 합니다.

15The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer Mission planned for launch in Fall 2002, will perform the first Space Ultraviolet sky survey. Five imaging surveys in each of two bands (1350-1750 and 1750-2800) will range from an all-sky survey (limit m AB ~20-21) to an ultra-deep survey of 4 square degrees (limit m AB ~26). In order to investigate the origin of the far-UV (FUV) flux from the early-type galaxies, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer is collecting the UV data for the elliptical-rich clusters at moderate redshifts (z<0.2) where the dominant FUV source is predicted to be hot horizontal-branch (HB) stars and their post-HB progeny. Computer controlled polishing of large optics has required complex and expensive tooling, which is impractical at the smaller scale. This paper describes the simulation of a simple aspheric polishing regime using a large active lap, and its embodiment in a new generalized aspheric polishing machine for instrumentation optics.
