15Previously, we suggested that imatinib incorporation into conventional chemotherapy as an alternative (imatinib interim therapy) might be a useful strategy for bridging the time to allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph(+) ALL). Here, we provide an updated report on this strategy in 29 patients. At the time of enrollment, 23 patients (79.3%) achieved complete remission (CR). After the first imatinib cycle,
The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes for Philadelphia-chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (Ph+ ALL) patients in remission treated with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Twenty-three adults were entered onto this study. The 2-year probabilities of relapse and disease-free survival (DFS) were 39.4 +/- 11.6% and 43.5 +/- 10.3% respectively. The presence of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was found to be an independent predictive factor affecting lowe
The aim of the present study was to identify graft-versus-leukemia effects and the factors that affect outcome in 201 adults with acute lymphobalstic leukemia who received myeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation from matched sibling or unrelated donors (1995-2004). One hundred seventy-eight (88.6%) of these patients had high-risk criteria, and 151 (75.1%) patients were transplanted in first complete remission (CR). All patients received unmodified stem cell grafts (185 bone marrow and
BACKGROUND: Previously, the authors demonstrated the positive impact of imatinib on the outcome of allogeneic stem cell transplantation in adults with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph-positive ALL). Here, the authors analyzed for risk factors that affect transplantation outcome, and they focused particularly on the prognostic relevance of minimal residual disease level at each treatment stage. METHODS: Fifty-two patients with newly diagnosed Ph-positive ALL who c
Fourteen adults with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) were studied to evaluate the role of imatinib prior to allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Of these, 12 patients were in complete hematologic response (CHR), and 2 were refractory. Imatinib was administered as an interim schedule after each chemotherapy course. After the first imatinib cycle, 11 patients remained in sustained CHR with a decrease in the BCR-ABL/ABL ratios (0.89 logs), and one refr
BACKGROUND: The sensitivity of Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) to reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) versus myeloablative conditioning (MAC) allogeneic HCT by minimal residual disease (MRD) kinetics is not well established. METHODS: This study compared long-term outcomes based on MRD kinetics for 79 patients with RIC transplants and 116 patients with MAC transplants in first complete remission (CR1) af
In this paper we present an autostereoscopic 3D display using a directional subpixel rendering algorithm in which clear left-right images are expressed in real time based on a viewer's 3D eye positions. In order to maintain the 3D image quality over a wide viewing range, we designed an optical layer that generates a uniformly distributed light field. The proposed 3D rendering method is simple, and each pixel processing can be performed independently in parallel computing environments. To prove t
The aim of the present study is to evaluate the kinetics of CD34(+) cells and investigate the potential modulation of CD44 and CD31 expression on CD34(+) cells during continuous i.v. administration of G-CSF, thus to elucidate the possible mechanism of peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) mobilization. Fifteen healthy donors were enrolled in this study. G-CSF (10 microg/kg/day) was administered for four consecutive days through continuous 24-h i.v. infusion. For measurement of complete blood c
A semiconductor optical amplifier-based all-optical read-only memory (ROM) is successfully demonstrated through simulations using a one-level simplification method optimized for optical logic circuits. Design details are presented, and advantages are discussed in comparison with an all-optical ROM-employing decoder. We demonstrate that eight characters can be stored at each address in the American Standard Code for Information Interchange.
KAI1 COOH-terminal interacting tetraspanin (KITENIN) contributes to tumor invasion and metastasis in various cancers. The aim of current study was to evaluate whether KITENIN affects tumor cell invasion and prognosis in human colorectal cancers. We investigated the biologic role of KITENIN on tumor cell invasion by using small interfering RNA in Caco2, DLD1, and SW480. We evaluated the expression of KITENIN and activator protein-1 (AP-1) target genes in human colorectal cancer tissues. The tumor
A widely used approach to image registration involves finding the general linear transformation that maximizes the mutual information between two images, with the transformation being rigid-body [i.e., belonging to SE(3)] or volume-preserving [i.e., belonging to SL(3)]. In this paper, we present coordinate-invariant, geometric versions of the Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm on the groups SL(3), SE(3), and their various subgroups, that are applicable to a wide class of image registration probl
Seventy adults with acute promyelocytic leukemia were studied to clarify the significance of the level and kinetics of minimal residual disease (MRD) over their entire treatment course by realtime quantitative polymerase chain reaction. At a median follow-up of 44 months, nine relapses had occurred. The 5-year probabilities of relapse and disease-free survival were 17.3+/-5.4% and 81.5+/-5.4%, respectively. A MRD level of >10-3 after first consolidation was the most powerful predictor of relapse
