15BACKGROUND: The treatment options for odontogenic sinusitis (OS) include medical management including antibiotics and saline nasal irrigation, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), and dental treatment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether OS caused by dental caries and periapical abscess can be cured by dental treatment alone and which patients should consider surgery early. METHODS: A total of 33 patients with OS caused by dental caries and periapical abscess were enrolled. P
OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted evaluate the efficacy of electromyography (EMG) using transcartilaginous (TC) electrodes through the thyroid cartilage and perichondrium. METHODS: We prospectively collected EMG data from intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of 54 nerves at risk in 38 patients during thyroidectomy. We followed standardized IONM procedures in all operations. EMG signals from both endotracheal tube (ET) electrodes and TC needle electrodes were recorded simultaneously. We compa
Pure-tone audiometry (PTA) is the gold standard for assessing hearing loss. However, traditional PTA tests require specialized equipment, trained personnel, and a soundproof environment. Recently, smartphone-based PTA tests have been developed as an alternative method for hearing assessment. The aim of this study was to validate the accuracy and reliability of a smartphone application-based audiometry test. This study was conducted to assess the performance of application-based audiometry from N
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) in asthmatic patients has a high recurrence rate even after surgery. For this reason, oral steroids are frequently used, but their long-term use may cause side effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the long-term effects of budesonide nasal irrigation (BNI) in CRSwNP and asthma. An analysis of 33 patients with CRSwNP and well-controlled asthma, who performed BNI for more than 12 months, was performed. We compared oral steroid and an
Background/Objectives: Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) accompanied by asthma often show poor prognoses and require continuous management. This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of eosinophil counts in nasal polyp tissue for selecting individuals who would benefit from ongoing management in CRS patients with asthma. Methods: Patients with asthma who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for CRS with nasal polyps were included in the study. Eosinophil counts in nasal polyp tissues
While the educational benefits of the modern techniques such as virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) have been suggested, there is still a lack of reports on actual surgeons' experiences. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a holographic AR-based surgical training in tonsillectomy. Two otolaryngologists, 1 trainee and 1 instructor, performed 5 tonsillectomies using an AR headset (HoloLens 2, Microsoft, USA). The trainee wore the AR headset to share the surgical view throug
Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related multiphenotypic sinonasal carcinoma (HMSC) is a recently described neoplasm entity that presents only in the sinonasal tract. Histologically, it displays features of both a surface-derived carcinoma and a salivary gland carcinoma, and is associated with high-risk HPV, specifically HPV type 33. Whereas majority of the cases display high-grade histologic features, HMSC paradoxically behaves in a relatively indolent fashion. It is important and meaningful to disti

In the case of unilateral recurrent otitis media with effusion in adults, endoscopic examination of the nasopharyngeal tumor is necessary. Rarely, tumors can also develop in the eustachian tube. The incidence of lipoma in the eustachian tube is very rare. Lipomas are benign tumors arising from mesenchymal tissue and composed of well-differentiated adipocytes. A 49-year-old female patient visited for nasal congestion. But she had history of repetitive ventilation tube insertion due to recurrent o
Meningocele is a bulging of the meninges through a defect in the skull or spine, forming a cystic structure filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and devoid of neural tissues. If left untreated, meningocele with CSF leakage can lead to potentially life-threatening complications such as recurrent meningitis. We report a case of spontaneous meningocele in the frontal sinus treated with endoscopic excision and reconstruction of the skull base. A 44-year-old male, with no previous history of trauma,
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate operator workload and usability of a dual-arm teleoperated robotic platform designed for solo-physician outpatient otorhinolaryngology (ENT) procedures. METHODS: A dual-arm system integrating a flexible endoscope manipulator (EndoBot) and an instrument manipulator (ToolBot) was developed and controlled via dual joysticks and a multi-view interface. Five otolaryngologists performed simulated nasal and oral procedures on an anatomical phantom and completed standardized workl
Tuberculous spondylitis, also known as Pottâs disease, is a disease involving the spine with progressive destruction. It most commonly involves the thoracic and lumbosacral spine and may result in severe deformity or neurologic deficit. Although cervical spine involvement is rare, it can cause life threatening event. Recently, 70-year-old man presented with progressive dyspnea and dysphagia. Physical examination and radiologic studies showed a huge retropharyngeal abscess with bony erosion and
A paratracheal cyst is an air-filled cyst of the trachea line by respiratory ciliated epithelium. Most paratracheal cysts are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on routine radiologic examination. However, symptoms such as cough or fever may occur due to chronic infection of paratracheal cysts and there are few case reports of infected paratracheal cysts. Recently, 75-year-old woman presented with fever and dyspnea. Cystic mass with inflammation was found at the right side of the trachea
Background and ObjectivesContact granuloma is granulation tissue that occurs mainly in the vocal process of arytenoid cartilage. Among several etiological factors, gastric acid reflux is known to be an important cause. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical characteristics of contact granuloma and analyze the effectiveness of proton pump inhibitor in the treatment of contact granuloma. Materials and MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 40 patients who were treated wi
