15With the recent rapid growth of technological comprehension in nanoscience, researchers have aimed to adapt this knowledge to various research fields within engineering and applied science. Dramatic advances in nanomaterials marked a new epoch in biomedical engineering with the expectation that they would have huge contributions to healthcare. However, several questions regarding their safety and toxicity have arisen due to numerous novel properties. Here, recent studies of nanomaterial toxicolo
Abstract Gold particles have been widely used in the treatment of prostate cancer due to their unique optical properties, such as their light-heat conversion in response to near-infrared radiation. Due to well-defined synthesis mechanisms and simple manufacturing methods, gold particles have been fabricated in various sizes and shapes. However, the low photothermal transduction efficiency in their present form is a major obstacle to practical and therapeutic uses of these particles. In the curre
Therapeutic nanocomplexes have been extensively developed for the effective treatment of aggressive cancers because of their outstanding versatility, easy manipulation, and low cytotoxicity. In this study, we describe the synthesis of a novel bovine serum albumin (BSA)-based nanocomplex harboring both Bcl-2-specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) and gold (Au) nanorods (siRNA and rods encapsulated in BSA; SREB) with the aim of developing a targeted breast cancer therapeutic. The SREB complexes co
Nanoparticles (NPs) of protein-based materials have become one of the most promising candidates for drug carriers in drug-delivery systems because of their in vivo nontoxicity, biodegradability, compatibility with hydrophilic drugs, and adaptability to the human body. Many studies have investigated the fabrication of protein NPs from human serum albumin (HSA) as a new drug carrier. It is important for these NPs to remain in the blood until they reach their therapeutic target to achieve the desir
Within a cell there are several mechanisms to regulate gene expression during cellular metabolism, growth, and differentiation. If these do not work properly, the cells will die or develop abnormally and, in some cases, even develop into tumors. Thus, a variety of exogenous and endogenous approaches have been developed that act on essential stages of transcription and translation by affecting the regulation of gene expression in an intended manner. To date, some anticancer strategies have focuse
Avidin and nanometer-sized zeolite crystals (∼300 nm) tethered with d -biotin readily self-assemble into thin (2−20 μm) and very long (>1 cm) fibrous aggregates in a buffer solution of pH = 7.4 when the avidin-to-zeolite weight ratio (A/Z) is equal to or higher than 0.2. At A/Z = 0.2, the exteriors of the produced fibrils are covered with zeolite-A crystals. At A/Z = 0.4, the zeolite crystals are completely buried within the fibrils covered with thick layers of avidin. At A/Z = 0.8−1.0, the morp
Due to its unique physical and chemical characteristics, DNA, which is known only as genetic information, has been identified and utilized as a new material at an astonishing rate. The role of DNA has increased dramatically with the advent of various DNA derivatives such as DNA-RNA, DNA-metal hybrids, and PNA, which can be organized into 2D or 3D structures by exploiting their complementary recognition. Due to its intrinsic biocompatibility, self-assembly, tunable immunogenicity, structural prog
RNA can self-fold into complex structures that can serve as major biological regulators in protein synthesis and in catalysis. Due to the abundance of structural primitives and functional diversity, RNA has been utilized for designing nature-defined goals despite its intrinsic chemical instability and lack of technologies. Here, a robust, free-standing RNA hydrogel is developed through a sequential process involving both ligation and rolling circle transcription to form RNA G-quadruplexes, capab
Abstract Due to the demand for next‐generation green wearable and flexible energy storage devices, gel‐based electrolytes are attracting much attention as a key part of this system, but existing materials are problematic because of their low performance. It is necessary to maintain the function of the material by allowing it to be bent in the form of amorphous gels, easily manufactured in large quantities without toxic chemical binders used in everyday life. Here, a new storage device driven by
The majority of anticancer therapeutics have failed to control the target cancers. Thus, new rational design concepts are critical. In most of the biological reactions, a cascade pathway is used to activate appropriate responses. In the cascade pathway, a small signal derived from neighboring environments can be amplified and it further triggers overwhelming and specialized responses. It can be applied to achieve powerful therapeutic effects for novel drug design strategies. Inspired by this con
A novel and simple method for the fabrication of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) clusters was introduced for use as an efficient near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agent. Cationic surfactants were employed to assemble AuNPs into clusters, during which polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used to stabilize the AuNP clusters. Through this manner, AuNP clusters with a uniform shape and a narrow size distribution (55.4 ± 5.0 nm by electron microscope) were successfully obtained. A mechanism for the formation of Au
The magnetic properties of nanoparticles make them ideal for using in various applications, especially in biomedical applications. However, the magnetic force generated by a single nanoparticle is low. Herein, we describe the development of nanocomplexes (size of 100 nm) of many iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) encapsulated in poly(lactic- co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) using the simple method of emulsion solvent evaporation. The response of the IONP-encapsulated PLGA nanocomplexes (IPNs) to an extern
