Globally inconsistent figure/ground relations induced by a negative part
Sung-Ho Kim, J. Feldman
SJR Q1Journal of VisionOA

Figure/ground interpretation is a dynamic and complex process involving the cooperation and competition of a number of perceptual factors. Most research has assumed that figure/ground assignment is globally consistent along the entire contour of a single figure, meaning that the one side of each boundary is interpreted as figure along the entire length of the boundary, and the other side interpreted as ground. We investigated a situation that challenges this assumption, because local cues to fig

Perceived Causality Can Alter the Perceived Trajectory of Apparent Motion
Sung-Ho Kim, Jacob Feldman, Manish Singh
SJR Q1Psychological Science

When objects collide, human observers perceive not only motion but also causal relations, such as which object caused the other to move. In the present experiments, we investigated whether such causal interpretations can actually influence the perceived path of apparent motion. Displays contained two alternately flashing motion targets positioned at either end of a semicircular occluder. Two additional "context objects" moved in such a way that the motion targets appeared to collide with and lau

The benefit of surface uniformity for encoding boundary features in visual working memory.
Sung-Ho Kim, Jung Oh Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Experimental Psychology Human Perception & Performance

Using a change detection paradigm, the present study examined an object-based encoding benefit in visual working memory (VWM) for two boundary features (two orientations in Experiments 1-2 and two shapes in Experiments 3-4) assigned to a single object. Participants remembered more boundary features when they were conjoined into a single object of uniform color than when they were not bound together into an object. However, such an object-based benefit diminished or disappeared when those feature

Nonrigid Illusory Motion in Depth Induced by Translational Motion of Static Images
Sung-Ho Kim, Thomas V. Papathomas
SJR Q2i-PerceptionOA

A new nonrigid motion illusion is presented based on patterns of aligned nonparallel line segments undergoing apparent motion. The illusory effect can be explained by the mismatch in local orientation segments that signals local rotational motion contradictory to the global translational motion.

A Directional Congruency Effect of Amplified Dilated Time Perception Induced by Looming Stimuli With Implied Motion Cues
Joohee Seo, Euisun Kim, Sung-Ho Kim
SJR Q3Perceptual and Motor Skills

The perception of time is not veridical, but, rather, it is susceptible to environmental context, like the intrinsic dynamics of moving stimuli. The direction of motion has been reported to affect time perception such that movement of objects toward an observer (i.e., looming stimuli) is perceived as longer in duration than movement of objects away from the observer (i.e., receding stimuli). In the current study we investigated whether this looming/receding temporal asymmetry can be modulated by

The Relative Contribution of Facial and Body Information to the Perception of Cuteness
Jihyun Hwang, Yejin Lee, Sung-Ho Kim
SJR Q1Behavioral SciencesOA

Faces and bodies both provide cues to age and cuteness, but little work has explored their interaction in cuteness perception. This study examines the interplay of facial and bodily cues in the perception of cuteness, particularly when these cues convey conflicting age information. Participants rated the cuteness of face-body composites that combined either a child or adult face with an age-congruent or incongruent body alongside manipulations of the head-to-body height ratio (HBR). The findings

How Do Looming and Receding Emotional Faces Modulate Duration Perception?
Yeji Min, Sung-Ho Kim
SJR Q3Perceptual and Motor Skills

The direction of visual motion has been shown to affect the perception of interval duration; objects moving towards an observer (i.e., looming) are perceived to last longer than objects moving away (i.e., receding), and this has been explained in terms of arousal- or attention-based modulation. To dissociate the two competing accounts, we investigated how the influence of motion direction on duration perception is modulated by the emotional content of stimuli. Participants were given the tempora

Curved apparent motion induced by amodal completion and the launching effect
Sung-Ho Kim, M. Singh, Jacob Feldman
SJR Q1Journal of VisionOA

Many aspects of amodal completion in static scenes have been studied, but relatively little is known about how completion interacts with moving structures in dynamic scenes. We examined whether amodal completion can bias an apparent motion path towards longer curved paths behind an occluder, which would violate the well-established principle that apparent motion follows the shortest possible path. In a series of experiments, observers viewed motion sequences of two alternating rectangular target

이 결과는 가려져서 보이지 않는 물체의 무형 표상이 움직임 대응 관계에 사용되어, 출현과 소멸(coming into/going out of existence)의 물리적 시퀀스가 드러남과 가려짐(coming into/going out of sight)의 가현운동으로 지각될 수 있음을 시사한다.

Curved Apparent Motion Initiated by a Causal Launch
Sung-Ho Kim, Jacob Feldman, Manish Singh

When objects collide, observers perceive not only the motion but also causal relations, such as which objects caused which others to move. The present study investigated whether such causal interpretations can influence the perceived path of apparent motion. We presented a display of two alternately flashing motion tokens on the ends of a semicircular occluder, and two additional “context objects” placed immediately above the tokens moved upward at each token onset. In such a display the motion
