15Intravital imaging of the cochlea revealed that neutrophil recruitment and infiltration during inflammation are spatially controlled and exclusively observed in the SL but not in the SV and organ of Corti.
This study investigated the synergistic effects of risk factors on age-related hearing loss (ARHL) using nationwide cross-sectional data of 33,552 individuals from the 2010‒2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Patients with ARHL were selected based on their pure-tone audiometry results. Previously reported risk factors for ARHL were analyzed using logistic regression and propensity score-matching, and synergistic effects between risk factors were analyzed using propensity
Cochlea macrophages regulate cochlea inflammation and may harbors the potentials to protect hearing function from injury, including acoustic overstimulation. Cochlea macrophage numbers increase at 3–7 days after acoustic stimulation. However, the exact timing of macrophage infiltration and maturation from inflammatory monocytes is unclear. Furthermore, neutrophils may also be involved in this process. Therefore, in this study, we investigated time-dependent immune cell infiltration, macrophage t
OBJECTIVE: Delayed facial palsy has been reported following various types of otologic surgery. However, the exact characteristics of this disease have not been fully elucidated because of its low incidence. This study analyzed case series studies on delayed facial palsy to increase the sample size and outline credible disease characteristics. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched on October 10, 2018. STUDY SELECTION: Delayed facial palsy case series covered i
<b>Background:</b> Endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) is an extremely rare disease that does not have established clinical guidelines.<b>Objective:</b> To provide guidance for the diagnosis and management of ELSTs.<b>Methods:</b> We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were suspected to have a lesion in the location of endolymphatic sac. Seven patients were included. Histopathologic diagnosis confirmed five ELSTs and two other diseases.<b>Results:</b> All of the enrolled pati
OBJECTIVES: Resident macrophages are well known to be present in the cochlea, but the exact patterns thereof in spiral ligaments have not been discussed in previous studies. We sought to document the distribution of macrophages in intact cochleae using three-dimensional imaging. METHODS: Cochleae were obtained from C-X3-C motif chemokine receptor 1+/GFP mice, and organ clearing was performed. Three-dimensional images of cleared intact cochleae were reconstructed using two-photon microscopy. The
OBJECTIVES: Common cavity deformity is a rare congenital bony labyrinth malformation associated with profound hearing loss. Cochlear implants are widely used for hearing rehabilitation for common cavity deformities; however, the reported prognosis is poor. Due to the deformed anatomical structure, it is important to consider the position of the electrodes to maximize the performance of the cochlear implant. The present study discusses the impact of electrode placement on hearing outcomes. METHOD
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to investigate the educational status in bilateral prelingual deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI), also known as early cochlear implantees (CIs). Type of schooling and enrollment rate of tertiary education were analyzed as primary results. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Participants in this study comprised a highly homogeneous group of deaf patients who underwent cochlear implantation at a similar age. Sixty-four Korean patients were enrolled. S
Chemical labyrinthectomy using gentamicin is a popular method for treating intractable vertigo attacks in Meniere’s disease. However, the risk of hearing loss remains a major concern for clinicians. We investigated the effect of simultaneous dexamethasone and gentamicin application on hearing preservation and vertigo control in patients with intractable unilateral Meniere’s disease. A single-institutional, prospective, single-blinded, randomized clinical trial was conducted. Gentamicin-soaked Ge
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether preserved vestibular function in the high-frequency range influences the prognosis of patients with bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) after vestibular rehabilitation. METHODS: Twenty-four patients followed up with vestibular rehabilitation were recruited. The enrolled patients were divided into two groups according to the preservation of the high-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) based on the video head impulse test (vHIT). The resu
The nine-step test is a classical method for evaluating Eustachian tube function. It directly assesses the patient's capacity to equilibrate middle ear pressure by swallowing. However, there are insufficient studies to appraise its diagnostic performance. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and cut-off value of the nine-step test in patients with obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (oETD) and patulous Eustachian tube (PET). Enrolled subjects were divided in
OBJECTIVES: The investigation of cochlear hair cells and lateral wall is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. However, it is a mandatory experiment in audiology research. Here we suggest a novel method for investigating the inner ear microstructures from intact cochleae using two-photon laser scanning microscopy (TPLSM). This technique guarantees fewer artifacts and technical simplicity. METHODS: mice were used to investigate the feasibility of visualizing cellular structures in the coc
