With the recent rapid increase in obesity worldwide, metabolic syndrome (MetS) has gained significant importance. MetS is a cluster of obesity-related cardiovascular risk factors including abdominal obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, high blood pressure and impaired glucose tolerance. MetS is highly prevalent and strongly associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease, putting a great burden on human society. Therefore, it is very important to reduce MetS ris

The Potential Role of Biomarkers Associated with ASCVD Risk: Risk-Enhancing Biomarkers
Seonghoon Choi
SJR Q1Journal of Lipid and AtherosclerosisOA

Serum cholesterol is major risk factor and contributor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Therapeutic cholesterol-lowering drugs, especially statin, revealed that reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) produces marked reduction of ASCVD events. In the preventive scope, lower LDL-C is generally accepted as better in proven ASCVD patients and high-risk patient groups. However, in patients with low to intermediate risk without ASCVD, risk assessment is clinically g

Importance: High-intensity statin is strongly recommended in patients at very high risk (VHR) of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, concerns about statin-associated adverse effects result in underuse of this strategy in practice. Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of a moderate-intensity statin with ezetimibe combination in VHR and non-VHR patients with ASCVD. Design, Setting, and Participants: This was a post hoc analysis of the Randomized Comparison of Efficacy and Safet

Performance evaluation for UWB signal transmission with different modulation schemes in multi-cell environment distributed using ROF technology
Sang‐Il Kim, Hodeok Jang, Seonghoon Choi, Yong‐Hoon Kim, Jichai Jeong

We describe a radio-over-fiber (ROF) based ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission system. In a multi-cell environment using ROF technology, the performance of UWB signal transmission with different modulation schemes is evaluated in a realistic channel model based on a modified /spl Delta/-K model. Then, we investigate the effects of multipath interference and delay time at the overlapped area on the performance of UWB in terms of link margin and bit error rates. The performance of a RAKE receiver wi

Importance: Amiloride has been proposed as an alternative to spironolactone for treating resistant hypertension. However, no randomized clinical trials have compared the efficacy of spironolactone and amiloride in patients with resistant hypertension. Objective: To determine whether amiloride is noninferior to spironolactone in reducing home-measured systolic blood pressure (SBP) in patients with resistant hypertension. Design, Setting, and Participants: Prospective, open-label, blinded end-poin

Chromatic Dispersion Tolerance of New Duobinary Transmitters Based on Two Intensity Modulators Without Using Electrical Low-Pass Filters
Jongmin Lee, Ho-Deok Jang, Y. Kim, Seonghoon Choi, Seoyeon Park, Jichai Jeong
SJR Q1Journal of Lightwave Technology

This paper describes an investigation of the effect of the extinction ratio and the chirp parameter of the first intensity modulator on the transmission performance of a proposed duobinary transmitter based on two intensity modulators without using electrical low-pass filters. This modulation scheme can generate duobinary signals using only two-level electrical signals without the conversion process to three-level electrical signals using electrical low-pass filters. The simulation results sugge

Reversible Symptomatic Myocarditis Induced by All-Trans Retinoic Acid Administration during Induction Treatment of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia: Rare Cardiac Manifestation as a Retinoic Acid Syndrome

Journal of Cardiovascular UltrasoundOA

Treatment by All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) followed by anthracycline-AraC chemotherapy has improved the outcome of acute promyelocytic leukemia. ATRA is usually well tolerated, but a few major side effects can be observed. Retinoic acid syndrome (RAS) often occurs during the induction chemotherapy of acute promyelocytic leukemia. A pericardial effusion is a common cardiac manifestation but myocarditis has been rarely documented. Here we reports a very rare case of fully recovered myocarditis as

Brain abscess is a serious complication of congenital heart disease in children and adolescents. This association is rarely observed in adults. This article describes the case of a 41-year-old man who presented with altered mental status. Brain MRI showed a brain abscess at the left frontal lobe. The patient was successfully treated with surgical removal and appropriate antibiotics. Echocardiographic examination showed atrial septal defect (ASD) with bidirectional shunt.
