15BACKGROUND: The diagnosis and treatment of recurrent gastric cancer remains difficult. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for recurrence of gastric cancer and the prognosis for these patients. METHODS: Of 2328 patients who underwent curative resection for gastric cancer from 1987 to 1995, 508 whose recurrence was confirmed by clinical examination or reoperation were studied retrospectively. The risk factors that determined the recurrence patterns and timing were investigated
Gastric cancer is a heterogeneous cancer, making treatment responses difficult to predict. Here we show that we identify two distinct molecular subtypes, mesenchymal phenotype (MP) and epithelial phenotype (EP), by analyzing genomic and proteomic data. Molecularly, MP subtype tumors show high genomic integrity characterized by low mutation rates and microsatellite stability, whereas EP subtype tumors show low genomic integrity. Clinically, the MP subtype is associated with markedly poor survival
This study demonstrated that RAG with lymphadenectomy can be applied safely and effectively for patients with gastric cancer.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated microsatellite instability (MSI) status and programed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression as predictors of prognosis and responsiveness to chemotherapy for stage II/III gastric cancer. BACKGROUND: The clinical implications of MSI status and PD-L1 expression in gastric cancer have not been well-elucidated. METHODS: Tumor specimens and clinical information were collected from patients enrolled in the CLASSIC trial-a randomized controlled study of capecitabine plus oxa
BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography (PET) with 18- fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) has been used to both detect and stage a variety of malignancies. The current study examined the value of PET for preoperative staging of gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients (49 males and 19 females) with gastric adenocarcinoma, who were referred for preoperative FDG-PET scans, were enrolled in this study. The patients underwent spiral-computed tomography (CT) within 1 week of referral. The final d
BACKGROUND: There has been much controversy surrounding the biologic behavior and prognosis of early stage gastric signet ring cell carcinoma (SRC). To clarify the biologic behavior of early stage gastric SRC (early SRC), we compared the clinicopathologic features and prognosis of early SRC with other histologic types. METHODS: A total of 933 patients with early gastric carcinoma who had undergone gastrectomy from 1987 to 1995 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 263 patients with SRC were
This study investigated whether MSI status can be used as a prognostic biomarker and whether it is helpful for predicting which patients will benefit from 5-FU based adjuvant chemotherapy. Between 2005 and 2008, an MSI status examination was performed in 1,990 gastric cancer patients who had undergone curative gastrectomy for gastric adenocarcinoma. MSI was analyzed by PCR amplification with fluorescent dye-labeled primers of mononucleotide markers (BAT25 and BAT26) and dinucleotide markers (D5S
BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic and robotic gastrectomy have been adopted rapidly despite lack of evidence concerning technical safety and controversy regarding additional benefits. This study aimed to compare clinically relevant complications after open, laparoscopic and robotic gastrectomy. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on surgical complications in patients undergoing gastrectomy with curative intent for histologically proven adenocarcinoma between 2005 an
MSI gastric cancer was associated with good prognosis but there was heterogeneity in the recent studies. Changed epidemiology and effects of chemotherapy are potential causes of heterogeneity. Establishing a consensus for defining MSI in gastric cancer should be preferred for future studies.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although various types of minimally invasive treatment have emerged as the best front-line therapies for early gastric cancer (EGC), there have been no established indications that these attempts are applicable. The purpose of this study was to propose indications for the application of minimally invasive therapy for EGC. METHODS: A total of 566 patients with EGC who had undergone gastrectomy with D2 or more extended lymphadenectomy, from July 1993 to December 1997 wer
BACKGROUND: The seventh edition of the tumor, lymph node (LN), metastasis (TNM) staging system increased the required number of examined LNs in gastric cancer from 15 to 16. However, the same staging system defines lymph node-negative gastric cancer regardless of the number of examined LNs. In this study, the authors evaluated whether gastric cancer can be staged properly with fewer than 15 examined LNs. METHODS: The survival rates of 10,010 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy from 1987
