15The results of this study suggest that the intervertebral disc is an appropriate site for adenovirus-mediated transfer of exogenous genes and subsequent production of therapeutic growth factors. Gene therapy therefore may have useful applications for study of the basic science of the intervertebral disc and for clinical management of degenerative disc disease.
In vitro transducibility of human intervertebral disc cells by adenovirus is relatively insensitive to disc degeneration grade. Because the rate-limiting step for successful gene therapy is the ability to transfer genes efficiently to the target tissue, the achievement of efficient gene transfer to human intervertebral disc cells(using a direct, adenovirus-mediated approach) is an important and necessary step in the development of gene therapy strategies for the management of human intervertebra
Osteoporotic fractures are one of the most common causes of disability and a major contributor to medical care costs worldwide. Prior osteoporotic fracture at any site is one of the strongest risk factors for a new fracture, which occurs very soon after the first fracture. Bone mineral density (BMD) scan, a conventional diagnostic tool for osteoporosis, has clear limitations in diagnosing osteoporotic fractures and identifying the risk of subsequent fractures. Therefore, early and accurate diagn
Inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, PGE2, and NO) seem to play a crucial role in hypertrophy and ossification of LF. Degenerated, herniated intervertebral disks, and facet arthrosis may influence LF through inflammatory cytokines and cause hypertrophy and ossification of LF.
Combination or "cocktail" gene therapy offers a promising mechanism for maximizing matrixsynthesis with low dose of adenoviral mixtures, circumventing systemic, local toxic effect, and immune response.
The change in osteosarcoma tumor volume after preoperative adjuvant chemotherapy and its relationship to the histopathologic response was investigated using various reproducible volumetric methods. Tumor volume was measured before and after chemotherapy in 41 patients with osteosarcoma using an ellipsoid formula in plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging measurement. Based on intraobserver and interobserver variability for the volumetric
A poor surgical outcome would be inevitable because of the worsening of symptoms owing to the natural history of PD. Therefore, our current study suggested surgical indication should be exercised cautiously in the patients with PD and spinal stenosis.
NP cells in atelocollagens under the stimulation of TGF-β1 and BMP-2 exhibited anabolic responses in transcriptional and translational levels. Hence, such an approach can provide a suitable engineered tissue for IVD regeneration with potential for robust refurbishment of matrix.
Vitamin D deficiency was common in patients with LSS. However, vitamin D status was improved after decompressive surgery, and postoperative 25-OHD level was significantly correlated with surgical outcomes.
BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is the current standard of care for ACL tears. However, the results are not consistently successful; autografts or allografts have certain disadvantages; and synthetic grafts have had poor clinical results. PURPOSE: To determine if recellularization of decellularized tendons combined with mechanical stimulation in a bioreactor could replicate the mechanical properties of the native ACL and be successfully used for ACL reconstruction in
