15A new mechanism for high-temperature sensing with single-mode optical fibers is proposed. This sensing mechanism is based on whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonance in bent optical fibers. The interference fringes between the core mode and WGMs were induced by bending a cladding-thinned fiber and forming a loop in the fiber. The wavelength shift of the resonance peaks as a function of temperature is investigated. It is demonstrated that the single loop of bend ring in the fibers can be used as a
[1] Low-oxygen and low-pH events are an increasing concern and threat in the Eastern Pacific coastal waters, and can be lethal for benthic and demersal organisms on the continental shelf. The normal seasonal cycle includes uplifting of isopycnals during upwelling in spring, which brings low-oxygen and low-pH water onto the shelf. Five years of continuous observations of subsurface dissolved oxygen off Southern California, reveal large additional oxygen deficiencies relative to the seasonal cycle
[1] Near-bottom diurnal thermocline shoaling and diurnal baroclinic currents were observed from time series data of water temperature, salinity, pressure, and velocity collected from August 2006 to January 2007 in the nearshore zone off the Huntington Beach where the local inertial frequency is higher than the diurnal frequency (poleward of the diurnal critical latitude). During the stratified season, the deep offshore cold (dense) water, when shoaled into shallow water along the bottom, was oft
Abstract Typhoon Soulik decayed rapidly via two‐way interaction with the northern East China Sea, the extratropical shelf region, before landing on the Korean Peninsula on 23 August 2018. In the northern East China Sea, where the water column is strongly stratified with warm surface and cold subsurface waters, a large cold wake emerged with intense sea surface cooling, which is primarily caused by vertical mixing in the water column. This abrupt sea surface cooling rapidly increased the downward
Abstract. Terra Nova Bay in Antarctica is a formation region for high-salinity shelf water (HSSW), which is a major source of Antarctic Bottom Water. Here, we analyze spatiotemporal salinity variability in Terra Nova Bay with implications for the local HSSW production. The salinity variations in the Drygalski Basin and eastern Terra Nova Bay near Crary Bank in the Ross Sea were investigated by analyzing hydrographic data from instrumented moorings, vessel-based profiles, and available wind and s
Abstract Chemical properties of the California Undercurrent (CU) have been changing over the past several decades, yet the mechanisms responsible for the trend are still not fully understood. We present a survey of temperature, salinity, O 2 , pH, and currents at intermediate depths (defined here as 50–500 m) in the summer (30 June to 10 July) and winter (8–15 December) of 2012 in the southern region of the Southern California Bight. Observations of temperature, salinity, and currents reveal tha
The East Sea (Japan Sea), a small marginal sea in the northwestern Pacific, is ventilated deeply down to the bottom and sensitive to changing surface conditions. Addressing the response of this marginal sea to the hydrological cycle and atmospheric forcing would be helpful for better understanding present and future environmental changes in oceans at the global and regional scales. Here, we present an analysis of observations revealing a slowdown of the long-term deepening in water boundaries as
Ultra short long-period gratings (LPGs) fabricated using the electric arc discharge method are demonstrated with regular single-mode fibers. The gratings were as short as two periods, which were the shortest LPGs ever reported. The evolution of this short gratings and their characteristics are investigated in this paper. The excellent bending insensitivity and high temperature robustness demonstrated by this unique LPG make it particularly suitable for harsh environment sensing and communication
High frequency (2–20 days) sea level fluctuations, driven by atmospheric pressure changes, must be eliminated from TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data, else these data sampled at 10‐day interval will suffer aliasing when interpreted as lower frequency variability of the subsurface pressure and circulation. A simple analytic Helmholtz‐like model [ Lyu et al. , 2002 ], which explains successfully the nonisostatic sea level response in the Japan/East Sea (JES), is applied to correct the high‐frequency se
Abstract This study presents observations of the cross-sectional structure of resonant response to sea/land breezes (SLBs) off Huntington Beach (HB) in the Southern California Bight (SCB). A resonant response to local diurnal wind stress fluctuations associated with SLB forcing occurs intermittently and produces strong diurnal oscillations of flow and temperature resulting from enhanced work of the diurnal local wind on the sea surface. At nighttime (daytime), a coherent cross-sectional circulat
Oceanic internal waves are known to be important to the understanding of underwater acoustics, marine biogeochemistry, submarine navigation and engineering, and the Earth's climate. In spite of the importance and increased knowledge of their ubiquity, the wave generation is still poorly understood in most parts of the world's oceans. Here, we use satellite synthetic aperture radar images, in-situ observations, and numerical models to (1) show that wave energy (having relatively high amplitude) r
We present what we believe to be the first study of deep subwavelength surface modes in binary metal-dielectric metamaterials. By employing anomalous coupling in binary periodicity, peculiar properties of band structure and eigenmode symmetry are obtained. We show that strongly confined plasmonic Tamm-like and Shockley-like surface modes can be formed at the termination of the array. We clarify the character of each surface mode and analyze its unique symmetry with the corresponding band structu
