15Despite of higher local recurrence rate, RFA may be considered as a therapeutic option for patients who are considered unsuitable for conventional surgical treatment. Randomized prospective controlled trials comparing the therapeutic outcome of RFA and HR are definitely warranted.
BACKGROUND: Because palpating colonic tumors during laparoscopy is impossible, the precise location of a tumor must be identified before operation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of various diagnostic methods that are used to localize colorectal tumors and to propose an adequate localization protocol for laparoscopic colorectal surgery. METHODS: A total of 310 patients underwent laparoscopy-assisted colectomy between April 2000 and March 2006. We investigated if the locations
BACKGROUND: KRAS mutations are common in colorectal cancer (CRC). The role of KRAS mutation status as a prognostic factor remains controversial, and most large population-based cohorts usually consist of patients with non-metastatic CRC. We evaluated the impact of KRAS mutations on the time to recurrence (TTR) and overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic CRC who underwent curative surgery with perioperative chemotherapy. METHODS: Patients who underwent curative resection for primary and
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the prognostic value of tumor deposit (TD) counts and incorporated them with the number of positive lymph nodes to develop a revised nodal staging. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The current American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging on colon cancer includes the TDs only for nodenegative patients, as N1c, and their counts are not considered. METHODS: We included consecutive patients with stage III colorectal cancer who underwent curative resections between January 2010 a
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of chest radiography (CXR) and abdominal computed tomography (CT) for detecting pulmonary metastases after curative surgery for colorectal cancer. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the records of all patients with pulmonary metastasis from colorectal cancer who underwent curative resection between 1994 and 2004 at our institution. RESULTS: Pulmonary metastases were detected in 193 patients by either CXR or abdom
BACKGROUND: Although a single incision laparoscopic (SIL) technique has been used increasingly in colorectal surgery, there are only a few reports on the clinical availability of this approach coupled with low anterior resection (SIL-LAR) for colorectal cancers. We report here 96 consecutive cases of SIL-LAR and reduced port LAR cases, of which the initial approach was SIL. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of prospectively collected data of SIL-LAR cases performed by a single surgeon in S
BACKGROUND: system and single port laparoscopic (SPL) right hemicolectomy and determine whether the novel SPR system is safe and feasible. METHODS: From January 2019 to December 2020, a total of 141 patients (41 patients for SPR and 100 patients for SPL) who electively underwent right hemicolectomy for colon cancer performed by a single surgeon were included in the study. RESULTS: The time to the first bowel movement was 3 (range, 1-4) days after surgery in the SPR group and 3 (2-9, range) days
Conversion from SILS to HALS in colorectal surgery was feasible and effective. It seemed to add minimal morbidity while preserving advantages of minimally invasive surgery. It could be considered an alternative to open conversion in cases of SILS, especially when the conversion to conventional laparoscopy does not seem to be helpful.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between distress at initial diagnosis and disease-free survival in patients with resectable colon cancer. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Considerable research has examined the psychological impact of having a confirmed diagnosis of cancer, but relatively limited research has examined the impact of distress during the diagnostic phase on oncological outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. We included newly diagnosed colon cancer p
