15OBJECTIVE: IL23R polymorphisms have been shown to have a significant association with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). To date, these studies have been restricted to Caucasian patients with AS. Our study addresses this relationship in Korean patients with AS. METHODS: A total of 451 patients with AS and 392 ethnically matched healthy controls were enrolled. All patients were native Koreans with AS satisfying the modified New York criteria. In total, 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) within th
We previously reported that digital tomosynthesis (DTS) is a reliable tool for evaluating bony structures of the hand. The current study aimed to identify the prevalence and distribution of sesamoid bones and accessory ossicles of the foot using DTS and to compare the results to those of conventional radiography (CR). Foot images (DTS, 213; CR, 44) of 213 patients taken at a tertiary hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Sesamoid bones were identified in the metatarsaophalangeal (MTP), distal
OBJECTIVE: Supramalleolar tibial osteotomy (SMO) for asymmetric ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is known to lead to satisfactory. Here, authors present a preliminary report on SMO surgical treatment in patients with asymmetric ankle arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed cases of asymmetric ankle OA treated by modified SMO between January 2011 and October 2015. Clinical assessment was performed with the use of the ankle and hindfoot score of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS
We report the clinical characteristics, genetic analysis, and muscle biopsy findings of a family with Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy and a novel mutation (Leu162Pro) in the LMNA gene. Within this single family, the age of onset and disease severity varied among the family members. In addition, focal defects of nuclear membranes with chromatin blebs in endothelial cells was shown via electron microscopy.
BACKGROUND: Clinical and radiological outcomes including fixation stability of osteotomy site were compared in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who underwent modified Ludloff osteotomy to correct hallux valgus with osteotomy site fixation using two screws versus those who underwent additional fixation using a plate. METHODS: The fixation technique performed with two screws was used to fix the osteotomy sites following modified Ludloff osteotomy in 15 patients (15 feet, Group S), while the augm
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the outcomes of joint-preserving surgery for hallux valgus deformities with minimal erosion of the metatarsophalangeal joint in rheumatoid patients with non-rheumatoid controls, and to determine the prognostic factors of recurrence in rheumatoid patients. METHODS: A total of 18 rheumatoid patients (20 feet, Group I) and 35 non-rheumatoid patients (39 feet, Group II) were included. The mean follow-up was 29.6 months. Radiographic and clinical outcomes were compared
AIM: Most heel pain occurs at the posterior or plantar aspect, where main entheses of the heel are located. However, simple radiographs as basic work-up tools, their features based on their association with local symptoms in the heel in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients, have rarely been described. METHOD: Forty patients with AS and unilateral heel pain were enrolled to evaluate radiographic differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic heels. The two groups were assessed according to symp
Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor of soft tissue characterized by osteoid production and has a very low prevalence, comprising approximately 4% of all osteosarcomas and about 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas, and a total of about 350 cases have been reported until now. Heterotopic ossification is a pathological finding of bony tissue in soft tissue regions such as muscle, skin and subcutaneous tissue. We report a case of an 86-year-old woman with a history of total hip arthroplasty (
Purpose: To study computerized measurements of angular parameters on 100% and 150% resized digital radiography of hallux valgus deformity Materials and Methods: 30 digital radiography of standing foot anteroposterior view of hallux valgus patients were included. Two observers(A, B) independently measured hallux valgus angle (HVA), 1-2 intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA) in two times on both 100%-size and 150% magnified images respectively, using computerized
Purpose: To study inter- and intra-observer reliabilities of computerized measurements of the angular parameters of hallux valgus deformity, using two different kinds of software tools for angle measurement on the digital radiography. Materials and Methods: On 35 digital radiographies of standing foot anteroposterior view of hallux valgus, two observers (A, B) independently measured hallux valgus angle (HVA) and 1-2 intermetatarsal angle (IMA1-2) twice, using two methods. In method I, an angle w
