15Type-II band engineered quantum dots (CdTe/CdSe(core/shell) and CdSe/ZnTe(core/shell) heterostructures) are described. The optical properties of these type-II quantum dots are studied in parallel with their type-I counterparts. We demonstrate that the spatial distribution of carriers can be controlled within the type-II quantum dots, which makes their properties strongly governed by the band offset of the comprising materials. This allows access to optical transition energies that are not restri
We report a "smart" gold nanoparticle that is designed to aggregate in mild acidic intracellular environments by its hydrolysis-susceptible citraconic amide surface. With a relatively small size of 10 nm, the "smart" gold nanoparticles can be efficiently internalized into cancerous cells. Triggered by pH change, the nanoparticle surfaces are engineered to have both positive and negative charges. Electrostatic attractions between the nanoparticles can rapidly form aggregates inside the cells, and
We report a new family of oligomeric alkyl phosphine ligands for nanocrystal quantum dots. These oligomeric phosphines show effective binding affinity to quantum dot surfaces. They form thin and secure organic shells that stabilize quantum dots in diverse environments including serum and polymer matrices. They maintain the initial as-grown photoluminescence quantum yield of the quantum dots and enable homogeneous incorporation into various matrices. They present a chemically flexible structure t
Recently, lead halide perovskite (LHP) materials have shown potential for many optoelectronic applications. However, the structural instability and toxicity concerns necessitated robust and heavy-metal-free alternatives. We report a synthetic route to Cs2AgInCl6 double-perovskite nanocrystals (DP NCs) that have the crystal structure replacing two lead ions in LHP by a pair of silver and indium ions. Cubic-shaped Cs2AgInCl6 DP NCs were obtained with a narrow size distribution, which showed superi
Synthesis of a size series of colloidal ZnTe/ZnSe (core/shell) quantum dots (QDs) is reported. Because of the unique Type-II characters, their emission can range over an extended wavelength regime, showing photoluminescence (PL) from blue to amber. The PL lifetime measures as long as 77 ns, which clearly indicates the Type-II characteristics. ZnTe/ZnSe (Core/Shell) QDs can be further passivated by ZnS layers, rendered in water, while preserving the optical and chemical stabilities and thus prove
A challenge in using plasmonic nanostructure-drug conjugates for thermo-chemo combination cancer therapy lies in the huge size discrepancy; the size difference can critically differentiate their biodistributions and hamper the synergistic effect. Properly tuning the plasmonic wavelength for photothermal therapy typically results in the nanostructure size reaching ∼100 nm. We report a new combination cancer therapy platform that consists of relatively small 10 nm pH-responsive spherical gold nano
Abstract A new type of quantum dot (QD) ligand chemistry is introduced that can provide positive, negative, or zwitterionic surface QDs. CdSe/CdZnS core‐shell QDs are decorated with ligands, and the non‐specific and specific interactions of the QDs through their surface charge are investigated with the focus on cellular adsorptions and endocytosis. Zwitterionic QDs are compact with a ligand hydrodynamic thickness of less than 2 nm, they are colloidally very stable over a broad pH range and even
A simple and novel electrostatic coupling method is reported, which provides a hyaluronic acid-quantum dot conjugate (HA-QD) that is colloidally stable and size-tunable from 50 to 120 nm. The HA-QDs show cancer targeting efficiency, which suggests diagnostic and imaging applications. The conjugates are also demonstrated for the fluorescence staining capability for lymphatic vessels in vitro and in vivo. Using the HA-QDs in a small animal model, lymphatic vessels are visualized real-time in vivo
Microenvironment responsive nanomaterials are attractive for therapeutic applications with regional specificity. Here we report pH responsive gold nanoparticles which are designed to aggregate in acidic condition similar to cancer environment and returned to its original disassembled states in a physiological pH. The pH responsive behavior of the particles is derived by change of electrostatic interaction among the particles where attraction and repulsion play a major role in low and high pH of
Recent technological advances have expanded fluorescence (FL) imaging into the second near-infrared region (NIR-II; wavelength = 1000-1700 nm), providing high spatial resolution through deep tissues. However, bright and compact fluorophores are rare in this region, and sophisticated control over NIR-II probes has not been fully achieved yet. Herein, we report an enzyme-activatable NIR-II probe that exhibits FL upon matrix metalloprotease activity in tumor microenvironment. Bright and stable PbS/
A DNA hydrogel is reported as a delivery vehicle for gold nanorods and doxorubicin. The two photothermal and chemo cancer agents were co-loaded using electrostatic and DNA binding interactions, respectively. Light-triggered and highly synergistic combination cancer therapy was demonstrated in cellular and animal models.
We report a nanoparticle-based probe that can be used for a "turn-on" theragnostic agent for simultaneous Raman imaging/diagnosis and photothermal therapy. The agent consists of a 10 nm spherical gold nanoparticle (NP) with pH-responsive ligands and Raman probes on the surface. They are engineered to exhibit the surface with both positive and negative charges upon mildly acidic conditions, which subsequently results in rapid aggregations of the gold NPs. This aggregation simultaneously provides
