SJR Q1CancersOA

The aim of this study was to examine the association between indoor tanning use and the risk of overall and early-onset (age < 50) melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). To evaluate the association between indoor tanning and skin cancer, a systematic review of the literature published until July 2021 was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE. Summary relative risk (RR) from 18 studies with 10,406 NMSC cases and 36 studies with 14,583 melanoma cases showed significant association bet

An increased risk of gastric cancer for pickled vegetable and salted fish intake has been suggested, yet the lack of a dose-response association warrants a quantitative analysis. We conducted a meta-analysis, combining results from our analysis of two large Korean cohort studies and those from previous prospective cohort studies. We investigated the association of pickled vegetable and salted fish intake with gastric cancer in the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study and the Korean Multi-center Canc

SJR Q1Neurology

Head-shaking nystagmus (HSN) refers to the nystagmus induced by head oscillation, and usually beats to the healthy side in unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy.1 It may occur from velocity storage mechanism and Ewald second law.1,2 In perverted HSN (pHSN), the nystagmus develops in the plane other than that being stimulated, i.e., downbeat or upbeat after horizontal head oscillation. pHSN has been reported in diffuse cerebellar degeneration or medullary lesion,3,4 and signifies central vestibula

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that polymorphisms in the estrogen receptor (ER)-alpha gene (ESR1) may be associated with reproductive patterns of women. This study was performed to investigate whether the genetic polymorphisms of the ER-alpha gene are associated with idiopathic premature ovarian failure (POF) in a Korean population. METHODS: The subjects were 126 idiopathic POF patients and 221 post-menopausal controls recruited from university hospitals between 1999 and 2004. Genotyping was p

Classification of clusters may provide opportunities to understand the pattern of COVID-19 outbreaks better and implement more effective suppression strategies. Social distancing administered by the government may effectively suppress large clusters but may not effectively control small and sporadic clusters.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to determine whether genetic polymorphisms of aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor (AhRR), glutathione-S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) and glutathione-S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) are associated with susceptibility to advanced stage endometriosis in a Korean population. METHODS: This study comprised 316 women with advanced stage endometriosis and 256 control women without endometriosis. Genotyping of the AhRR codon 185 was performed by real-time polymerase chain reaction

Underrepresentation of non-European (EUR) populations hinders growth of global precision medicine. Resources such as imputation reference panels that match the study population are necessary to find low-frequency variants with substantial effects. We created a reference panel consisting of 14,393 whole-genome sequences including more than 11,000 Asian individuals. Genome-wide association studies were conducted using the reference panel and a population-specific genotype array of 72,298 subjects

OBJECTIVES: There is a great deal of interest in the possibility that environmental factors may influence the risk of developing allergic rhinitis (AR) in early life. We investigated the simultaneous effects of mode of delivery and duration of breastfeeding on the development of AR in children. METHODS: Data from 1,374 children participating in the Allergic Rhinitis Cohort Study for kids (ARCO-kids study) was analyzed. All subjects were divided into AR or non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) groups. We present an in-depth single-cell atlas of in vitro multiculture systems on human primary airway epithelium derived from normal and diseased lungs of 27 individual donors. Our large-scale single-cell profiling identified new cell states and differentiation trajectories of rare airway epithelial cell types in human distal lungs. By integrating single-cell datasets of human lung tissues, we discovered immune-primed subsets enriched in lungs and organoids derived from patients with chronic respira

OBJECTIVES: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, crude incidence and mortality rates have been widely reported; however, age-standardized rates are more suitable for comparisons. In this study, we estimated and compared the age-standardized incidence, mortality, and case fatality rates (CFRs) among countries and investigated the relationship between these rates and factors associated with healthcare resources: gross domestic product per capita, number of hospital beds per pop

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: eGFR slope has been used as a surrogate outcome for progression of CKD. However, genetic markers associated with eGFR slope among patients with CKD were unknown. We aimed to identify genetic susceptibility loci associated with eGFR slope. A two-phase genome-wide association study identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TPPP and FAT1-LINC02374 , and 22 of them were used to derive polygenic risk scores that mark the decline of eGFR by disrupting binding of near

Chronological age (CA) predicts health status but its impact on health varies with anthropometry, socioeconomic status (SES), and lifestyle behaviors. Biological age (BA) is, therefore, considered a more precise predictor of health status. We aimed to develop a BA prediction model from self-assessed risk factors and validate it as an indicator for predicting the risk of chronic disease. A total of 101,980 healthy participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were included in this st

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the Delta, Greenland, and Monte Carlo methods for estimating 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the population-attributable fraction (PAF). The objectives were to identify the optimal method and to determine the influence of primary parameters on PAF calculations. METHODS: A dataset was simulated using hypothetical values for primary parameters (population, relative risk [RR], prevalence, and variance of the beta estimator ) involved in PAF calculations. Th

Abstract Epigenetic influence plays a role in the association between exposure to air pollution and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, research regarding sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is scarce. Herein, we investigate the associations between prenatal SO 2 exposure and ADHD rating scale (ARS) at ages 4, 6 and 8 years repeatedly in a mother–child cohort (n = 329). Whole blood samples were obtained at ages 2 and 6 years, and genome-wide DNA methylation (DNAm) was analyzed for 51 ch

BACKGROUND: Fragmentomics, the investigation of fragmentation patterns of cell-free DNA (cfDNA), has emerged as a promising strategy for the early detection of multiple cancers in the field of liquid biopsy. However, the clinical application of this approach has been hindered by a limited understanding of cfDNA biology. Furthermore, the prevalence of hematopoietic cell-derived cfDNA in plasma complicates the in vivo investigation of tissue-specific cfDNA other than that of hematopoietic origin.
