Evaluation of the 7th UICC TNM Staging System of Gastric Cancer
Sung Joon Kwon
SJR Q1Journal of the Korean Gastric Cancer AssociationOA

Since January of 2010, the seventh edition of UICC tumor node metastasis (TNM) Classification, which has recently been revised, has been applied to almost all cases of malignant tumors. Compared to previous editions, the merits and demerits of the current revisions were analyzed. Many revisions have been made for criteria for the classification of lymph nodes. In particular, all the cases in whom the number of lymph nodes is more than 7 were classified as N3 without being differentiated. Therefo

Prognostic Significance of Lymphovascular Invasion in Node‐Negative Gastric Cancer
Ju‐Hee Lee, Min Gyu Kim, M. Jung, Sung Joon Kwon
SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in gastric cancer patients without lymph node metastasis. METHODS: A total of 699 patients with primary tumor pT1-3/pN0-1 gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent curative resection from 2001 to 2010 were categorized into 3 groups: One-hundred and eleven patients with pN0/LVI(+), 475 with pN0/LVI(-), and 103 with pN1. RESULTS: The tumors in patients with N0/LVI(+) had more aggressive clinicopat

Prognostic Impact of Splenectomy on Gastric Cancer: Results of the Korean Gastric Cancer Study Group
Sung Joon Kwon, Members of the Korean Gastric Cancer Study Group
SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

The relation between splenectomy and survival time after curative total gastrectomy for gastric cancer was reviewed retrospectively on 492 patients treated at nine hospitals between 1989 and 1993. Altogether 260 patients underwent splenectomy, and 232 patients did not. A univariate analysis revealed that the survival time of patients with splenectomy was significantly less than those without splenectomy (p = 0.0265). In a subgroup of our patients stratified to adjust for the stage of disease, th

Surgery and Prognostic Factors for Gastric Stromal Tumor
Sung Joon Kwon, Members of the Korean Gastric Cancer Study Group
SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

Morphologic studies of gastric stromal tumors (GSTs) indicate that mitotic counts (MCs) and tumor size are major discriminants predictive of biologic behavior. The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of GST behavior, including the prognostic factors and surgical treatment of GSTs. A retrospective analysis (1990--1997) of the clinical course for 116 patients with GSTs was completed, with a median follow-up of 43 months. Tumors were categorized as malignant GSTs (n = 17) when the

Gastric Partitioning Gastrojejunostomy in Unresectable Distal Gastric Cancer Patients
Sung Joon Kwon, Ha Gyoon Lee
SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

The main purpose of bypass surgery in patients with unresectable distal gastric cancer is to improve their quality of life (QoL). However, the result of conventional gastroenterostomy is dismal including continuous bleeding due to the contact of food material on the tumor surface and early obstruction of the stoma by tumor growth. Developing more effective surgery is warranted to improve the QoL of these patients. Among the 1158 patients with gastric cancer who underwent surgery from March 1993

The Influence of Gastrectomy on the Change of Bone Metabolism and Bone Density

SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

OBJECTIVES: Abnormalities of bone metabolism could be followed in gastrectomized patients as a late complication. Nowadays, many biochemical and radiologic measurements are applied to detect these abnormalities. The aim of our study is to determine the valuable parameter as an appropriate screening test during long-term follow-up periods and define the usefulness of new biochemical markers for bone metabolism by comparing with traditional markers. METHODS: Fifteen patients who had undergone part

Clinicopathologic Characteristics of Borrmann Type 4 Gastric Cancer
Sung Joon Kwon, Goo Jin Lee
Journal of the Korean Surgical Society

Purpose: More than half the Korean gastric cancer patients are diagnosed at a late stage. An understanding of the clinicopathological characteristics of advanced cases is warranted, especially in order to give tailor-made treatments. Methods: Ninety-five Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer patients, who received surgical treatment at the Department of Surgery, Hanyang University Hospital during the period between June 1992 and December 2001, were enrolled in this study. Several clinicopathological pr

Can 3-year Disease-free Survival be Substituted for 5-year Overall Survival in Curatively Resected Gastric Cancer?
Sung Joon Kwon, Hyoung Ju Kim, Mi Kyung Kim
SJR Q1Journal of the Korean Gastric Cancer Association

Purpose: The 5-year survival rate is the most useful parameter for evaluating the effect of management on most malignant tumors. Recurrence after a curative resection for gastric cancer occurs mostly within 3 years of the operation, which caused us to evaluate whether a 3-year disease-free survival (3DFS) can be substituted for a 5-year overall survival (5OS). Materials and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 656 consecutive patients who had undergone a curative resection for gastric can
