7Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had unprecedented global impact, with significant effects on mortality and healthcare utilization. This study evaluated the direct and indirect impacts of COVID-19 on mortality and healthcare utilization in South Korea, a country that implemented strict public health measures. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using national databases from January 2015 through May 2022. The study compared mortality patterns and intensi
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterized by substantial genetic heterogeneity across populations, yet genetic features in Asian populations remain underexplored. This study aimed to describe the clinical and genetic landscape of Korean IPF patients and compare findings with reference populations. The authors analyzed 107 Korean IPF patients from Severance Hospital (2012-2023), including 19 (17.8%) with family history of IPF. Genomic DNA was genotyped using Illumina Multi-Ethnic Genot
Background: Cryobiopsy using a 1.1-mm probe enables the acquisition of larger and better-preserved tissue specimens for peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs). However, the effects of oversheathed cryobiopsy on diagnostic performance and procedural safety remain uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate whether the use of an oversheath influences diagnostic performance and procedural safety during bronchoscopic biopsy of PPLs using a 1.1-mm cryoprobe. Methods: This single-center retrospective study i
Background/Objectives: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may predict outcomes after organ transplantation. This study evaluated the peri-transplant prognostic value of NLR in lung transplantation (LTx). Methods: This retrospective study included 282 LTx recipients (2012–2020). NLR measured on PODs 1, 3, 7, and 28 predicted 6-month mortality. Generalized estimating equations analyzed serial trends. Multivariable regression and ROC analysis identified predictors for a composite model, assessing
Background/Objectives: Ventilator weaning imposes profound hemodynamic stress, unmasking cardiopulmonary vulnerability. Since conventional predictors of post-tracheostomy weaning failure remain elusive, biomarker-driven risk stratification offers a translational approach. We evaluated the prognostic utility of admission N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) as an early triaging tool for weaning failure and explored its therapeutic implications alongside optimal tracheostomy timin
Background: Body mass index (BMI) is a common nutritional marker, but admission-only measurements present limitations. Early dynamic BMI changes may better reflect metabolic stress and fluid balance. However, the clinical significance of early BMI trajectory during critical illness remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the impact of early BMI trajectory on mortality and ventilator weaning in critically ill patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 1355 adult patients
