Neurobiological findings related to Internet use disorders
Byeongsu Park, Doug Hyun Han, Sungwon Roh
SJR Q1Psychiatry and Clinical NeurosciencesOA

In the last 10 years, numerous neurobiological studies have been conducted on Internet addiction or Internet use disorder. Various neurobiological research methods - such as magnetic resonance imaging; nuclear imaging modalities, including positron emission tomography and single photon emission computed tomography; molecular genetics; and neurophysiologic methods - have made it possible to discover structural or functional impairments in the brains of individuals with Internet use disorder. Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Human twin studies have shown that certain responses to alcohol, including subjective perceptions, are genetically influenced. Previous studies have provided evidence that a low level of response to alcohol predicts future alcohol use disorders in humans. Recent genetic studies suggest an association between alcohol dependence and genetic variation in the γ-aminobutyric acid A (GABA(A)) receptor α2 subunit gene (GABRA2). Based on a haplotypic association of alcohol dependence with GA

Sungwon Roh, Sang‐Uk Lee, Minah Soh, Vin Ryu, Hyunjin Kim, Jungwon Jang, Hee Young Lim, Mina Jeon, Jong‐Ik Park, SungKu Choi, Kyooseob Ha
SJR Q1International Journal of Mental Health SystemsOA

World Health Organization has asserted that mental illness is the greatest overriding burden of disease in the majority of developed countries, and that the socioeconomic burden of mental disease will exceed that of cancer and cardiovascular disorders in the future. The life-time prevalence rate for mental disorders in Korea is reported at 27.6 %, which means three out of 10 adults experience mental disorders more than once throughout their lifetime. Korea's suicide rate has remained the highest

Cardiomyopathy associated with clozapine.
Sungwon Roh, Dong Hyun Ahn, Jung Hyun Nam, Byung Hwan Yang, Bang Hun Lee, Yang Suk Kim
SJR Q1Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology

Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic agent that is more effective than the standard neuroleptics currently used for treating refractory schizophrenia. In addition, clozapine is a drug with few extrapyramidal side effects. However, clozapine is also associated with potentially serious adverse effects, such as cardiac complications as well as agranulocytosis. Clozapine-related cardiomyopathy has not been previously reported in East Asia. This report describes a 31-year-old Korean male patient wi

Scientific Evidence for the Addictiveness of Tobacco and Smoking Cessation in Tobacco Litigation
Sungwon Roh
SJR Q2Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public HealthOA

Smokers keep smoking despite knowing that tobacco claims many lives, including their own and others'. What makes it hard for them to quit smoking nonetheless? Tobacco companies insist that smokers choose to smoke, according to their right to self-determination. Moreover, they insist that with motivation and willpower to quit smoking, smokers can easily stop smoking. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to discuss the addictive disease called tobacco use disorder, with an assessment of the addi

Smoking as a Preventable Risk Factor for Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rationale for Smoking Cessation Treatment in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
Sungwon Roh
SJR Q2Journal of Rheumatic DiseasesOA

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of multifactorial etiology. Smoking is considered one of the most established environmental risk factors for RA development and severity. A large proportion of patients with RA have a high prevalence of smoking history. Previous studies have provided evidence suggesting that smoking is associated with the development of RA. Smoking has been associated with several pathogenic mechanisms on RA development such as oxidative stress, inflamm

SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

The aim of this study was to compare mortality and the prevalence of chronic diseases between people with mental illness and the general population, and to explore which chronic diseases increase the risk of all-cause mortality, especially in people with mental illness. This study assessed data from the 2002–2019 Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening sample cohort. Results revealed that all-cause mortality was higher in people with mental illness compared to people without me

SJR Q1Psychological MedicineOA

Abstract Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic condition that impairs health and function. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment traditionally delivered face-to-face. Recently, digital CBT delivered online has gained prominence because of access barriers and user preferences. Although many digital CBT studies have emerged, few systematic reviews have directly compared digital and face-to-face CBT in adults with AUD. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to
