15Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorods were synthesized using a one-step process, and their structure, as well as the effects of decoration of In2O3 nanorods with Bi2O3 on the ethanol gas-sensing properties were examined. The multiple networked Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor showed responses of 171-1774% at ethanol concentrations of 10-200 ppm at 200 °C. The responses of the Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor were stronger than those of the pristine-In2O3 nanorod sensors by 1.5-4.9 times at the
Abstract Output power of thermoelectric generators depends on device engineering minimizing heat loss as well as inherent material properties. However, the device engineering has been largely neglected due to the limited flat or angular shape of devices. Considering that the surface of most heat sources where these planar devices are attached is curved, a considerable amount of heat loss is inevitable. To address this issue, here, we present the shape-engineerable thermoelectric painting, geomet
Hybrid carbon nanotube composites with two different types of fillers have attracted considerable attention for various advantages. The incorporation of micro-scale secondary fillers creates an excluded volume that leads to the increase in the electrical conductivity. By contrast, nano-scale secondary fillers shows a conflicting behavior of the decreased electrical conductivity with micro-scale secondary fillers. Although several attempts have been made in theoretical modeling of secondary-fille
Thermophilic H2 production from glucose was studied at 55-64 degrees C for 234 days using a continuous trickling biofilter reactor (TBR) packed with a fibrous support matrix. Important parameters investigated included pH, temperature, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and glucose concentration in the feed. The optimal pH and temperature were 5.5 and 60 degrees C, respectively. With decreasing HRT or increasing inlet glucose concentration, volumetric H2 production rate increased but the H2 producti
In response to the rising need for flexible and lightweight materials capable of efficient heat transport, many studies have been conducted to improve the thermal properties of polymers via nanofillers. Among the various nanofillers, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as the most promising, owing to their excellent thermal and electrical properties. Accordingly, CNT/polymer composites can be used as flexible and lightweight heat transfer materials, owing to their low density. In this study,
We report on a new principle yielding enhanced electromagnetic shielding, using as an example a composite comprised of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) integrated with a reactive ethylene terpolymer (RET). Such composites were synthesized through the chemical reaction of the functional groups on the CNT with the epoxy linkage of the RET polymer. The main advantages of these composites include good dispersion with low electrical percolation volume fractions (~0.1 volume%), yielding outstanding microwave s
There have been very few studies on the effects of combining two or more techniques on the sensing performance of nanostructured sensors. Cr2O3-functionalized ZnO nanorods were synthesized using carbothermal synthesis involving the thermal evaporation of a mixture of ZnO and graphite powders followed by a solvothermal process for Cr2O3-functionalization. The ethanol gas-sensing properties of multinetworked pristine and Cr2O3-functionalized ZnO nanorod sensors under UV illumination were examined
Zero temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) is essential for the precise control of temperature in heating element and sensor applications. Many studies have focused on developing zero-TCR systems with inorganic compounds; however, very few have dealt with developing zero-TCR systems with polymeric materials. Composite systems with a polymer matrix and a conducting filler show either a negative (NTC) or a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance, depending on several factors, e.
It was seen that composites constituted of functionalized single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) dispersed in a reactive ethylene terpolymer (RET) matrix possess a complex dielectric permittivity an order of magnitude larger than composites composed of pristine SWNTs and two orders of magnitude larger than functionalized multiwalled nanotube-RET composites. We seek to understand such an enhancement, both in terms of uniform nanotube dispersion and through a parallel resistor-capacitor model. We subsequ
The determination of the shape and rising velocity of gas bubbles in a liquid pool is of great importance in analyzing the radioactive aerosol emissions from nuclear power plant accidents in terms of the fission product release rate and the pool scrubbing efficiency of radioactive aerosols. This article suggests a simple parameterization for the gas bubble rising velocity as a function of the volume-equivalent bubble diameter; this parameterization does not require prior knowledge of bubble shap
