15RALP was beneficial for the earlier recovery of continence, although LRP and RALP had comparable safety and efficacy as minimally invasive surgery for prostate cancer when performed by a laparoscopic surgeon with intermediate experience. Long-term follow-up data are needed for further evaluation of oncologic and functional outcomes for both techniques.
BACKGROUND: Many attempts have been made to improve the treatment success rate of chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP). However, no treatment modality has achieved complete cure. The growth and development of the prostate is under direct hormonal control, and it is possible that prostatitis may be directly influenced by its hormonal milieu in a similar fashion to benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. Therefore, the effects of androgen deprivation on the treatment of CBP were investiga
Radical prostatectomy (RP) is the main treatment of prostate cancer (PCa). Biochemical recurrence (BCR) following RP remains the first sign of aggressive disease; hence, better assessment of potential long-term post-RP BCR-free survival is crucial. Our study aimed to evaluate a combined clinical-deep learning (DL) model using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) for predicting long-term post-RP BCR-free survival in PCa. A total of 437 patients with PCa who underwent mpMRI followed
Objective: To compare and analyze surgical and functional outcomes of transperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy (TRPN) and retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy (RRPN) in localized renal tumors, including ≥4 cm renal masses. Methods: Of 566 consecutive patients who underwent robotic partial nephrectomy by a single surgeon from December 2008 through July 2017, records for 523 patients who were preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively evaluated were analyzed for estimated glomerular filtr
Activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB) signaling is considered an important mechanism in the development of prostate cancers. A recent study revealed that IkappaB kinase epsilon (IKKepsilon), an activator of NF-kappaB, was overexpressed in breast cancers and acted as an oncogene. Expression of NF-kappaB members has been reported in prostate cancer tissues, but expression of IKKepsilon has not yet been studied in prostate cancers. In this study, we attempted to explore as to whether exp
In summary, our data highlighted that tumor size and nephrometry score, which are tumor-related factors, as well as the surgeon's experience, a surgeon-related factor, appear to be the critical predictive factors for Pentafecta achievement following RAPN.
Incidence of UC was much higher in KT recipients than the general population. Treatment outcomes for UC in KT recipients were not inferior to those of non-KT patients, except for the progression of bladder cancer. Special attention should be paid to screening and treatment of UC in KT recipients.
PURPOSE: We report our experience with hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (HALDN) and compare to our results with conventional open donor nephrectomy (ODN). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From February 2000 to January 2003, 100 patients (M:F 54:46) underwent HALDN at the Kangnam St. Mary's hospital. These patients were divided into early (1st 50 cases) and late (2nd 50 cases) groups. These cohorts were compared with 40 patients (M:F 26:14) who underwent ODN via a flank incision from January 199
OBJECTIVES: To examine the prognostic role of the pretreatment aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase or De Ritis ratio in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma receiving first-line systemic tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy. METHODS: We retrospectively searched the medical records of 579 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who visited Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from January 2001 through August 2016. After excluding 210 patients, we analyzed 360 patients who rec
Despite the increasing incidence of pathological stage T1 renal cell carcinoma (pT1 RCC), postoperative distant metastases develop in many surgically treated patients, causing death in certain cases. Therefore, this study aimed to create a radiomics model using imaging features from multiphase computed tomography (CT) to more accurately predict the postoperative metastasis of pT1 RCC and further investigate the possible link between radiomics parameters and gene expression profiles generated by
Abnormal expression of insulin gene enhancer-binding protein 1 (ISL1) has been demonstrated to be closely associated with cancer development and progression in several cancers. However, little is known about ISL1 expression in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). ISL1 has also been recognized as a positive modulator of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In this study, we focused on ISL1 which showed maximum upregulation at the mRNA level in the enzalutamide-resistant cel
PURPOSE: Survivin overexpression has been associated with an unfavorable outcome in human PCa; however, its role in metastasis remains elusive. We aim to (a) evaluate the clinical implications of survivin expression in PCa bone metastasis; (b) determine in vivo efficacy of BKM1740, a small-molecule compound, against PCa skeletal growth and survival; and (c) investigate molecular mechanism by which BKM1740 augments apoptosis in bone metastatic PCa cells. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Survivin expression w
