15Apolipoprotein E, type epsilon 4 allele (APOE epsilon 4), is associated with late-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is high avidity and specific binding of amyloid beta-peptide with the protein ApoE. To test the hypothesis that late-onset familial AD may represent the clustering of sporadic AD in families large enough to be studied, we extended the analyses of APOE alleles to several series of sporadic AD patients. APOE epsilon 4 is significantly associated with a series of probable
Amyloid beta-peptide (A beta) deposition in senile plaques and cerebral vessels is a neuropathological feature of Alzheimer disease (AD). We examined the possibility that commonly observed variability in A beta deposition in late-onset AD might be related to apolipoprotein E genotype (APOE gene; the two most common alleles are 3 and 4), since APOE4 is a susceptibility gene for late-onset AD and apolipoprotein E interacts strongly with A beta in vitro. In an autopsy series of brains of late-onset
Edaravone, the first known free radical scavenger, has demonstrated cellular protective properties in animals and humans. Owing to its antioxidant activity, edaravone modulates oxidative damage in various diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases. In 2015, edaravone was approved in Japan to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The distinguishing pathogenic features of neurodegenerative diseases include high reactive oxygen species levels and mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the correlat
Adrenal pseudocysts are rare cystic masses that arise within the adrenal gland and are usually non-functional and asymptomatic. Adrenal pseudocysts consist of a fibrous wall without a cellular lining. We report a patient with a 9 cm, left-sided suprarenal cystic mass who presented with abdominal discomfort of 2 years' duration. A 38-year-old woman was referred to our service for evaluation of abdominal discomfort and gastrointestinal symptoms. Routine laboratory tests were within normal limits.
Tubulovillous adenomas are common in the colon and rectum, but are rare in the common bile duct. Biliary adenomas may produce obstructive jaundice, which can be easily confused with a malignant neoplasm or stone. We report a case of a carcinoma in situ arising in a tubulovillous adenoma of the distal common bile duct causing obstructive jaundice. A 55-year-old male presented with a 10-d history of pruritus and progressive jaundice. Abdominal sonography and computed tomography showed a mass in th
Polyphenols are secondary metabolites of plants, fruits, and vegetables. They act as antioxidants against free radicals from UV light, pathogens, parasites, and oxidative stress. In Drosophila models, feeding with various polyphenols results in increased antioxidant capacity and prolonged lifespan. Therefore, dietary polyphenols have several health advantages for preventing many human diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, the exact role of
Transactive response DNA-binding protein-43 (TDP-43) is involved in the pathology of familial and sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). TDP-43-mediated ALS models in mice, Drosophila melanogaster, and zebrafish exhibit dysfunction of locomotor function, defective neuromuscular junctions, and motor neuron defects. There is currently no effective cure for ALS, and the underlying mechanisms of TDP-43 in ALS remain poorly understood. In this study, a genetic screen was performed to identify
Intestinal obstruction after liver transplant is a rare complication, with diverse clinical manifestations. Intestinal adhesion is the most common cause. However, internal hernia, abdominal wall hernia, and neoplasm are also reported. Intussusception is another rare cause of intestinal obstruction, which has been reported primarily in pediatric patients. Herein, we report a case of intestinal obstruction from intussusception in an adult liver transplant patient associated with post-transplant ly
We report here on a case of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the bile duct, associated with gallbladder agenesis. A 65-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with epigastric pain, anorexia, and nausea. Abdominal computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a 5 × 2.5 cm lobulated cystic lesion in the lateral lobe of the liver. The gallbladder was not seen on both imaging modalities. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography suggested the diagnosis of b
Glutathione S-transferase omega (GSTO) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in reducing oxidative stress. Recent studies suggest that polymorphic variants of GSTOs affect the onset age and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Although GSTO activity may affect the development and age dependency of several diseases, the mechanism by which GSTO inactivation in neurons regulates the susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases is unclear. In the present study, GstO2 knockdown in Drosophila led to
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the blood levels related to the bone mineral density by using the dual energy X-ray absorption for females before menopause and males younger than 50 years old. [Subjects and Methods] Between August 1, and September 15, 2013, the Z-score was measured in females before menopause and males younger than 50 years old using a bone mineral density measuring instrument. After the measurement, the subjects were classified into two groups, that is, t

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been widely performed as the gold standard for patients suffering with symptomatic gallstone disease. However, conversion to open cholecystectomy is a dilemma when the surgeon encounters a variant biliary anomaly. A gallbladder lying to the left of the round ligament represents a rare congenital anomaly, which is termed as a left-sided gallbladder. The true left-sided gallbladder, situated on the inferior aspect of the left lobe of the liver, is extremely rare an
