Biochar application has been considered as a promising solution to address the effects of modern agriculture on climate change. However, there is a lack of research on the biochar application of greenhouse gas emissions based on poor soils in Korean agricultural land. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar application according to different soil characteristics on soil organic carbon (SOC) improvement and greenhouse gas reduction. The incubation experiments were conducted

Global meta-analyses showed that biochar application can reduce N2O emission. However, no relevant review study is available for East Asian countries which are responsible for 70% of gaseous N losses from croplands globally. This review analyzed data of the biochar-induced N2O mitigation affected by experimental conditions, including experimental types, biochar types and application rates, soil properties, and chemical forms and application rates of N fertilizer for East As

, is a potential therapeutic agent for a variety of diseases such as inflammatory diseases, chronic neurodegenerative diseases, and cancers. Here, we found that the combination of cannabidiol and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) produces synergistic antitumor effects in vitro. However, this synergistic effect was not observed in normal colonic cells. The levels of ER stress-related proteins, including C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and phosphorylated protein kinase RNA-like ER kina

Ectopic livers are rarely seen intra-abdominal lesions. Ectopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be defined as an HCC arising from hepatic parenchyma located in an extrahepatic organ or tissue. The authors report a case of a primary, well-differentiated HCC arising from ectopic liver tissue in the left subphrenic space at the upper portion of the gastrorenal ligament that was successfully treated by laparoscopic resection. A 59-year-old man was referred to our department for the management of

Biochar emerged as a potential solution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, though previous studies obtained variable results regarding its effects on methane (CH4) emissions and crop yields. Global meta-analyses were conducted regarding the effectiveness of biochar, though regional meta-analyses are still needed. We performed a meta-analysis of 43 published papers to obtain the central tendency of the response to biochar application in East Asian rice paddies. Biochar application significan

SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The incidence of colorectal cancer in Asian countries is increasing. The change to a more westernized diet is known to be related to these increases, and there are reports on the relationship between meat consumption and colorectal cancer in Japan. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary change and colorectal cancer in Korea and Japan. METHODS: The data of meat and cereal consumption in Japan (1950-2002) and Korea (1970-2003), and the data of

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic proctitis (RIHP) is a serious complication of pelvic irradiation, and a 4% formalin solution has been used for 20 years in treating this sequelae. The first case involving formalin application for treatment of RIHP in Korea was reported in 1996, but there are no additional studies beyond this date. Our study reviews the use of formalin instillation and selective application. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the outcome of such treatments, be

SJR Q4Korean Journal of Environmental Agriculture

BACKGROUND: Application of urea may increase <TEX>$CO_2$</TEX> emission from soils due both to <TEX>$CO_2$</TEX> generation from urea hydrolysis and fertilizer-induced decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of increasing urea application on <TEX>$CO_2$</TEX> emission from soil and mineralization kinetics of indigenous SOC. METHODS AND RESULTS: Emission of <TEX>$CO_2$</TEX> from a soil amended with four different rates (0, 175, 350,

Abstract Biochar, with its potential to enhance soil fertility, sequester carbon, boost crop yields and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, offers a solution. Addressing the challenges posed by climate change is crucial for food security and agriculture. However, its widespread adoption in agriculture remains in its infancy. This study assessed the effects of rice hull biochar on cabbage production and greenhouse gas emissions, especially nitrous oxide (N 2 O). A trial, employing a randomized block

BACKGROUND: Biochar is a solid material converted from agricultural biomass such as crop residues and pruning branch through pyrolysis under limited oxygen supply.Biochar consists of non-degradable carbon (C) double bonds and aromatic ring that are not readily broken down by microbial degradation in the soils.Due to the recalcitrancy of C in biochar, biochar application to the soils is of help in enhancing soil carbon sequestration in arable lands that might be a strategy of agricultural sector

Conflict of interest: none declared. Dear Editor, A worldwide depletion of the ozone layer has been observed over the past decade. Concern was heightened when evidence emerged that ozone losses (albeit smaller than those over Antarctica) were also taking place in the Arctic and over heavily populated mid‐latitudes in both the northern and southern hemispheres. The damage to the ozone layer has therefore increased human exposure to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation, and subsequently increased the morb

Sphincter-preserving operations have increasingly been carried out during the last few decades; nevertheless, temporary defunctioning stoma is still being frequently used for low colorectal anastomosis (LCRA) with staplers and hand-sewn coloanal anastomosis (CAA). From 1994 to 2003, 131 consecutive patients with rectal cancer with tumours within 7 cm from the anal verge underwent LCRA or CAA without defunctioning stoma. Anastomotic complications and treatment were compared between the groups. Th
