15The goal of this review is to present the similarities and differences among the latest guidelines for noninvasive diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS), Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), and Korean Liver Cancer Association- National Cancer Center (KLCA-NCC) of Korea. In 2018, major guideline up
Abnormal aggregation of α-synuclein (α-Syn) has been known to cause Parkinson's disease and other chronic synucleinopathies. However, even though α-Syn is linked to pathophysiological mechanisms similar to those that produce acute neurodenegerative disorders, such as stroke, the role of α-Syn in such disorder is not clear. We presently studied whether α-Syn mediates poststroke brain damage and more importantly whether preventing α-Syn expression is neuroprotective and leads to better physiologic
Ribosomal proteins (RPs) have gained much attention for their extraribosomal functions particularly with respect to p53 regulation. To date, about fourteen RPs have shown to bind to MDM2 and regulate p53. Upon binding to MDM2, the RPs suppress MDM2 E3 ubiquitin ligase activity resulting in the stabilization and activation of p53. Of the RPs that bind to MDM2, RPL5 and RPL11 are the most studied and RPL11 appears to have the most significant role in p53 regulation. Considering that more than 17%
NiO/NiWO 4 composite yolk–shell spheres with a nanoscale NiO outer layer were prepared using one-pot ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and their gas sensing characteristics were studied. The NiO/NiWO 4 yolk–shell spheres exhibited an extremely high response to 5 ppm p -xylene (ratio of resistance to gas and air = 343.5) and negligible cross-responses to 5 ppm ethanol, ammonia, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and benzene, whereas pure NiO yolk–shell spheres showed very low responses and selectivity to all th
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is considered as a progressive form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To distinguish NASH from nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), we evaluated the diagnostic value of circulating miRNAs. Small RNA sequencing was performed on 12 NAFL patients and 12 NASH patients, and the miRNA expression was compared. After selecting miRNAs for the diagnosis of NASH, we analyzed the diagnostic accuracy of each miRNA and the combination of miRNAs. External validation w
BACKGROUND: MRI analysis of subtalar ligaments in the tarsal sinus has not been well performed. We retrospectively investigated the appearance of subtalar ligaments using 3D isotropic MRI and compared imaging findings of subtalar ligaments between patients with subtalar instability (STI) and controls. METHODS: Preoperative MRIs of 23 STI patients treated with arthroscopic subtalar reconstruction were compared to MRIs of 23 age- and sex-matched control subjects without STI. Thickness and width of
PURPOSE: Recently, randomized controlled trials have reported that conservative therapy can be a treatment option in patients with noncomplicated appendicitis. However, preoperative diagnosis of noncomplicated appendicitis is difficult. In this study, we determined predictive factors to distinguish patients with noncomplicated appendicitis from those with complicated appendicitis. METHODS: A total of 351 patients who underwent surgical treatment for acute appendicitis from January 2011 to Decemb
BACKGROUND: Despite antiviral therapy, liver function often fails to recover in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related decompensated cirrhosis. AIM: To establish a prognostic model to predict re-compensation in patients starting potent nucleos(t)ide analogue (NUC) therapy METHODS: We analysed 311 consecutive patients with HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis treated with entecavir or tenofovir. The primary outcome was re-compensation, defined as recovery to a Child-Pugh score of 5. The BC2
Nitrogen doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) nanoparticles were synthesized via a novel plasma enhanced electrolysis method using bulk titanium (Ti) as a source material and nitric acid as the nitrogen dopant. This method possesses remarkable merits with regard to the direct-metal synthesis of nanoparticles with its one-step process, eco-friendliness, and its ability to be mass produced. The nanoparticles were synthesized from bulk Ti metal and dipped in 5-15 mmol of a nitric acid electrol
Nine children with various hematologic disorders underwent bone-marrow transplantation following total-body irradiation with 750 rads at a rate of 26 rads/min. from a 13-MeV linear accelerator in conjunction with cytotoxic drugs. This treatment was tolerated reasonably well, with acceptable side effects. Three patients were alive and well at 18, 11, and 7 months post-transplantation at the time this paper was written.
Terlipressin-induced hyponatremia occurred frequently, especially in young patients with good liver function and higher Na level. Caution is required when administering terlipressin to patients with low body mass index.
BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen (APAP) is a readily available and safe painkiller. However, its overdose is the most common cause of acute liver injury (ALI). Many predisposing factors contribute to susceptibility to APAP-induced ALI. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the major cause of chronic liver disease, is considered an important predictor of APAP-induced ALI, although the exact mechanism controversial. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of NAFLD on APAP-induced ALI. METHO
