이 연구는 표준어 정책 비판론과 관련한 그간의 논의를 정리하면서, 특히 <표준어 규정> 폐지론에 대해 오해가 있는 부분을 바로잡고 현행 표준어 정책의 개선 방향을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 표준어 정책 비판론의 주요 논점은 크게 세 가지, 즉 (1) 표준어 규정과 언어 현실의 괴리에 대한 비판, (2) 표준어와 방언의 차별적 인식에 대한 비판, 그리고 (3) 성문화된 규정 중심의 표준어 정책 운용에 대한 비판 등으로 나누어 살펴보았는데, 특히 마지막 비판은 현행 <표준어 규정>을 폐지하고 그 기능을 국어사전으로 대체하자고 주장한다는 점에서 <표준어 규정> 폐지론으로 분류할 수 있다. <표준어 규정> 폐지론은 <표준어 규정> 유지개선론으로부터 여러 가지 오해와 비판을 받았는데, (1) 표준어 자체의 존재 가치를 부정한다는 오해, (2) 성문화된 <표준어 규정>의 문제점을 지나치게 과장한다는 오해, (3) 성문화된 어문 규정을 사전으로 대체하는 것의 한계를 간과한다는
