15Our data suggest that a cytologic diagnosis of focal thyroid FDG-PET incidentaloma regardless of SUV is mandatory considering the very high prevalence of thyroid malignancy.
BACKGROUND: The activating BRAF(V600E) mutation is the most common genetic alteration reported in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). While some reports suggest the BRAF(V600E) mutation is associated with factors predicting a poor prognosis and recurrence, this remains a controversial issue. AIM: To determine whether the presence of the BRAF(V600E) mutation is a prognostic indicator for clinical recurrence in low-risk patients with conventional PTC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study involved 203 co
We investigated whether serum thyroglobulin (Tg) measured at the time of remnant ablation (ablation-Tg) could be a prognostic indicator complementary to serum Tg levels at the time of the first diagnostic whole-body scan (WBS) after thyroid hormone withdrawal (control-Tg; approximately 6-12 months after ablation-Tg) and whether ablation-Tg could predict the persistence or recurrence of disease in low-risk patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Patients with differentiated thyroid carcin
BACKGROUND: The BRAF(V600E) mutation, the most common genetic alteration reported in papillary thyroid carcinoma, has been associated with poor prognostic factors. AIM: To determine whether the presence of the BRAF(V600E) mutation is associated with poor prognosis in Korean patients with conventional papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (micro-PTC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded thyroid tumour specimens taken from 60 patients with conventional micro-PTC, as well as f
BACKGROUND: Metastasis to the thyroid is uncommon, but the number of cases seems to have increased in recent years. This increase may be related to more frequent use of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in any suspected case. DESIGN: A retrospective review of patients with thyroid metastasis diagnosed by FNAB at the Asan Medical Centre. PATIENTS: Twenty-two patients who were seen at the Asan Medical Centre between 1997 and 2003. Median age was 55 years with range between 34 and 74 years. RESU
This study aimed to develop a novel multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer set for the identification of seven probiotic Lactobacillus species such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The primer set, comprising of seven specific and two conserved primers, was derived from the integrated sequences of 16S and 23S rRNA genes and their rRNA intergenic
BACKGROUND: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), although rare, is one of the most aggressive human cancers, and patients with ATC have extremely poor prognoses despite various therapeutic measures. We wished to determine the prognostic factors of survival and effect of treatment on survival rate in patients with ATC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the 121 patients (41 men and 80 women) diagnosed with ATC from January 1995 to June 2004 at 5 major referral centers in K
Mannheimia succiniciproducens MBEL55E isolated from bovine rumen is a capnophilic gram-negative bacterium that efficiently produces succinic acid, an industrially important four carbon dicarboxylic acid. In order to design a metabolically engineered strain which is capable of producing succinic acid with high yield and productivity, it is essential to optimize the whole metabolism at the systems level. Consequently, in silico modeling and simulation of the genome-scale metabolic network was empl
Recent advance in sequencing technology has enabled comprehensive profiling of genetic alterations in cancer. We have established a targeted sequencing platform using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology for clinical use, which can provide mutation and copy number variation data. NGS was performed with paired-end library enriched with exons of 183 cancer-related genes. Normal and tumor tissue pairs of 60 colorectal adenocarcinomas were used to test feasibility. Somatic mutation and copy n
BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is defined as a papillary thyroid carcinoma less than or equal to 1.0 cm in size. Independent prognostic factors for clinical recurrence of PTMC have not been clearly delineated. METHODS: Clinicopathological parameters predicting PTMC recurrence were determined by retrospective analysis of 307 patients. RESULTS: Of the 293 patients eligible for analysis, 14 (5%) had recurrence during a median follow-up time of 65 months. Recurrence was observed
BACKGROUND: Low serum vitamin D levels have been associated with several autoimmune diseases, but their association with thyroid autoimmunity is unclear. We evaluated the association of serum vitamin D levels with the prevalence of autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). METHODS: Our cross-sectional study included subjects who underwent routine health checkups, which included assays of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab), as well as thyroid ultrasonogr
OBJECTIVE: The presence of central neck lymph node (LN) metastases (defined as pN1a according to Tumor Node Metastasis classification) in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is known as an independent risk factor for recurrence. Extent of LN metastasis and the completeness of removal of metastatic LN must have an impact on prognosis but they are not easy to measure. Moreover, the significance of the size of metastatic tumors in LNs has not been clarified. This study was to evaluate the impact of the
Thyroid cancer is increasing all over the world. The exact cause of this increase is still debated and there are conflicting reports. Sophisticated molecular studies suggest that environmental chemicals may have effects of thyroid carcinogenesis. The development of powerful molecular biology techniques has enabled targeted next-generation sequencing for detection of mutations in thyroid cancer, and this technique can make a specific diagnosis of thyroid cancer in cytologically indeterminate case
