Cellular Senescence and Inflammaging in the Skin Microenvironment
Young In Lee, Sooyeon Choi, Won Seok Roh, Ju Hee Lee, Tae‐Gyun Kim
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Cellular senescence and aging result in a reduced ability to manage persistent types of inflammation. Thus, the chronic low-level inflammation associated with aging phenotype is called "inflammaging". Inflammaging is not only related with age-associated chronic systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but also skin aging. As the largest organ of the body, skin is continuously exposed to external stressors such as UV radiation, air particulate matter, and human microbiome. I

Surface Functionalized Electrospun Biodegradable Nanofibersfor Immobilization of Bioactive Molecules
Tae‐Gyun Kim, T.G. Park
SJR Q2Biotechnology Progress

A blend mixture of biodegradable poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(d,l-lactic-co-glycolic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-NH(2) (PLGA-b-PEG-NH(2)) block copolymer was electrospun to produce surface functionalized nanofibers. The resulting nanofibrous mesh with primary amine groups on the surface was applied for immobilization of biologically active molecules using lysozyme as a model enzyme. Lysozyme was immobilized via covalent conjugation by using a homobifunctional coupling agent. The nan

SJR Q1Phytotherapy Research

The antiviral effects of aqueous extracts of Terminalis chebula Retz., Sanguisorba officinalis L., Rubus coreanus Miq. and Rheum palmatum L. were examined by a cell culture system using a hepatitis B virus (HBV) producing cell line, HepG2 2.2.15. The extracts were assayed for the inhibition of HBV multiplication by measurement of HBV DNA and surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in the extracellular medium of HepG2 2.2.15 cells after an 8-day treatment. All extracts decreased the levels of extracellula

JUMONJI, a Critical Factor for Cardiac Development, Functions as a Transcriptional Repressor
Tae‐Gyun Kim, Jonathan C. Kraus, Junqin Chen, Youngsook Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

JUMONJI (JMJ) is a nuclear factor that is critical for normal cardiovascular development, evidenced by the analysis of jmj homozygous mutant mice. However, the molecular function of JMJ remains to be elucidated. In the present study, we investigated whether JMJ is a transcriptional modulator. Reporter gene assays using the GAL4-DNA binding domain fused to JMJ and a reporter gene consisting of the GAL4 binding sites upstream of a luciferase reporter gene indicated that JMJ functions as a powerful

AIM: Recombinant human growth/differentiation factor-5 (rhGDF-5) is being evaluated as a candidate therapy in support of periodontal regeneration. The objective of this study was to evaluate cementum and alveolar bone formation, and aberrant healing events following surgical implantation of rhGDF-5 in an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) carrier using an established periodontal defect model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral 4 x 5 mm (width x depth), one-wall, critical-size, intrabony periodontal

Synthesis of Size Controlled Spherical Silica Nanoparticles via Sol-Gel Process within Hydrophilic Solvent
Tae‐Gyun Kim, Gye Seok An, Jin Soon Han, Jae Uk Hur, Bong Geun Park, Sung‐Churl Choi
SJR Q2Journal of the Korean Ceramic SocietyOA

In this study, based on hydrolysis and condensation via Stber process of sol-gel method, synthesis of mono-dispersed silica nanoparticles was carried out with hydrophilic solvent. This operation was expected to be a more simplified process than that with organic solvent. Based on the sol-gel method, which involves simply controlling the particle size, the particle size of the synthesized silica specimens were ranged from 30 to 300 nm by controlling the composition of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEO

Although lead halide perovskite (LHP) solar cells can be externally applied to water electrolysis for solar-to-hydrogen conversion, an LHP device with a monolithic configuration for photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells is more economically ideal for viable hydrogen production. To this end, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst attachment on the LHP solar cell terminals is a governing factor for high efficiency and stable operation. Herein, we report monolithi

The pathophysiological role of dendritic cell subsets in psoriasis
Tae‐Gyun Kim, Dae Suk Kim, Hyoung‐Pyo Kim, Min‐Geol Lee
SJR Q1BMB ReportsOA

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by an erythematous scaly plaque of the skin and is occasionally accompanied by systemic complications. In the psoriatic lesions, an increased number of cytokine-producing dendritic cells and activated T cells are observed, which indicate that psoriasis is a prototype of an immune-mediated dermatosis. During the last decade, emerging studies demonstrate novel roles for the dendritic cell subsets in the process of disease initiation and ma

The Origin of Skin Dendritic Cell Network and Its Role in Psoriasis
Tae‐Gyun Kim, Sung Hoon Kim, Min‐Geol Lee
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Dendritic cells (DCs) are heterogeneous groups of innate immune cells, which orchestrate immune responses by presenting antigens to cognate T cells and stimulating other types of immune cells. Although the term 'DCs' generally represent highly mixed subsets with functional heterogeneity, the classical definition of DCs usually denotes conventional DCs (cDCs). Skin contains a unique DC network mainly composed of embryo precursor-derived epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs) and bone marrow-derived der

Statins inhibit chemotactic interaction between CCL20 and CCR6 in vitro: possible relevance to psoriasis treatment
Tae‐Gyun Kim, Dashlkhumbe Byamba, Wen Hao Wu, Min‐Geol Lee
SJR Q1Experimental DermatologyOA

Psoriasis is a chronic IL-23/Th17 pathway-associated skin disease. An increased expression of lesional CCL20 can recruit CCR6+ Th17, and lesional cytokine milieu persistently activates keratinocytes to produce CCL20. Lipid-lowering drugs, statins, are known to possess immune-modulating functions. In this study, we explored an inhibitory effect of statins on CCL20/CCR6 interaction. We demonstrated that IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-17A significantly increased CCL20 production from HaCaT cells. However, th
