15The use of robotic systems is assumed to provide a technically superior operative environment for minimally invasive surgery. However, our analysis of perioperative surgical outcomes indicated that robotic gastrectomy is not superior to laparoscopic gastrectomy. Clinical trials identification: NCT01309256.
Since gastric cancer patients with a synchronous second primary cancer are not rare, the possibility of synchronous cancers in gastric cancer patients should be considered. The prognosis of early stage gastric cancer patients with a synchronous second primary cancer was influenced more by the presence of the second primary cancer than by the gastric cancer itself.
PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical benefits of F18-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography and computed tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET/CT) over multi-detector row CT (MDCT) in preoperative staging of gastric cancer. METHODS: FDG-PET/CT and MDCT were performed on 78 patients with gastric cancer pathologically diagnosed by endoscopy. The accuracy of radiologic staging retrospectively was compared to pathologic result after curative resection. RESULTS: Primary tumors were detected in 51 (65.4%
BACKGROUND: The omentum has variable functions in surgical procedures. Nevertheless, there is very little information about the effect of omentum on abdominal complications after gastrectomy. The purpose of the present study was to determine the outcome of omentum-preserving gastrectomy for early gastric cancer. METHODS: We evaluated 1,116 patients who had a gastrectomy for early gastric cancer between the years 2004 and 2006; 992 patients underwent conventional gastrectomy (CG), and 124 patient

We propose a new scheme of matrix-free laser desorption/ionization with cation assistance for surface mass spectrometry of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates on gold substrates and gold nanoparticles (NPs). In a proof-of-concept experiment, a simple treatment using an aqueous salt solution such as NaI(aq) was shown to lead to a significant laser desorption/ionization, producing the characteristic (disulfide) ions of alkanethiolate molecules from the monolayers. Further efforts t
Although 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of gastric cancer, the underlying mechanism for 5-FU resistant phenotype, has yet to be elucidated. We hypothesized that the sensitivity of gastric cancer to 5-FU treatment might be related to the rate of glucose transport (GLUT), and investigated the expressions of GLUT1, 2, 3, and 4 in two different gastric cancer cells (SNU-216, moderately differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma; and SNU-668, signet ring cel
Purpose: The way in which the resection margin distance for gastric cancer patients who undergo a gastric resection influences the recurrence rate, aspects of recurrence, and the prognosis according to the characteristic of the tumor is not known. We aim to find a standard for tailor-made treatment after selecting patients in this point of view who need a more sufficient resection margin. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was done on 1,472 patients who underwent a gastrectomy due to g
Purpose: We evaluated the efficacy and prognostic predictability of the UICC TNM classification compared to UICC TNM classification in patients with gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Between June 1992 and December 2006, 1,633 patients with gastric cancer who had undergone gastric surgery and who had been analyzed by the UICC method were analyzed using the new UICC system. Results: Significant differences in 5-year survival rates were observed for UICC N0, N1, N2, N3a, and N3b compared to UI
AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of saline washout under the diaphragm on postoperative shoulder tip pain (STP) and β-endorphin (βE) levels in patients who had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). METHODS: Between December 2010 and March 2011, 50 patients requiring cholecystectomy for benign gallbladder disease were enrolled in this study. Twenty-five patients (Group 1) underwent LC without saline irrigation, whereas the other 25 were operated on with saline irri
BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to define differences between synchronous multiple gastric cancer (MGC) and solitary gastric cancer (SGC) and to evaluate the characteristics of missed lesions in MGC so as to improve the detection rate of missed lesions during perioperative procedure. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analysed data on 9157 gastric cancer patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer in a single hospital. The characteristics of 8893 SGC and 264 MGC patients were
