β-aminoisobutyric acid attenuates LPS-induced inflammation and insulin resistance in adipocytes through AMPK-mediated pathway

SJR Q1Journal of Biomedical ScienceOA

BACKGROUND: β-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) is produced in skeletal muscle during exercise and has beneficial effects on obesity-related metabolic disorders such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Thus, it is supposed to prevent high fat diet (HFD)-induced inflammation and insulin resistance in adipose tissue though anti-inflammatory effects in obesity. Previous reports have also demonstrated strong anti-inflammatory effects of BAIBA. METHODS: We used BAIBA treated fully different

Role of PP2A in the regulation of p38 MAPK activation in bovine aortic endothelial cells exposed to cyclic strain
Taeseung Lee, Sang Joon Kim, Bauer E. Sumpio
SJR Q1Journal of Cellular Physiology

We have previously reported that cyclic strain results in rapid phosphorylation of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPKs). The aim of this study was to examine the role of protein phosphatase type 2A (PP2A) in regulating p38 MAPK activation in bovine aortic endothelial cells exposed to cyclic strain. In this study, we demonstrate that the catalytic subunit of PP2A is tyrosine phosphorylated by cyclic strain, resulting in inhibition of phosphatase activity. Okadaic acid, an inhibitor of PP2

Modification of a Rodent Hindlimb Model of Secondary Lymphedema: Surgical Radicality versus Radiotherapeutic Ablation

SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

Secondary lymphedema is an intractable disease mainly caused by damage of the lymphatic system during surgery, yet studies are limited by the lack of suitable animal models. The purpose of this study was to create an improved model of secondary lymphedema in the hindlimbs of rodents with sustained effects and able to mimic human lymphedema. This was achieved by combining previously reported surgical methods and radiation to induce chronic lymphedema. Despite more radical surgical destruction of

SJR Q2MicrocirculationOA

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether LD can detect alterations in skin microcirculatory flow in type II diabetic neuropathy patients and determined which parameters were most predictive. METHODS: A prospective analysis was performed for three groups with presumed varying degrees of microvascular dysfunction: diabetics with neuropathy (DMN, n = 20), diabetics without microangiopathic complications (DM, n = 20), and healthy controls (n = 16). LD was performed under strictly controlled protocols with pr

SJR Q2Journal of Cellular Biochemistry

Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), an acute phase reactant implicated in vascular disease, is a matricellular glycoprotein with six domains that confer different functions. The authors have shown TSP-1 induces vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) chemotaxis via extracellular signal-regulated kinases-1 and -2 (ERK) and p38 kinase (p38) and that a fusion protein of the carboxyl terminal (COOH) and type 3 repeat (T3) domains independently induce VSMC chemotaxis. The purpose of this study was to determine whet

Cell signalling in vascular cells exposed to cyclic strain: the emerging role of protein phosphatases
Taeseung Lee, Bauer E. Sumpio
SJR Q2Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry

Phosphorylation of tyrosine or serine/threonine residues of intracellular proteins is a reversible and dynamic process which is essential in controlling cellular growth, migration and survival. The phosphorylation states of numerous intermediary signalling proteins are governed by the opposing activities of protein kinases and phosphatases. Abnormal phosphorylation states have been linked with many human diseases, including cancer, diabetes, hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy. Recently, severa

Use of Self-Assembling Peptides to Enhance Stem Cell Function for Therapeutic Angiogenesis

SJR Q2Stem Cells InternationalOA

The use of nanomaterials for biomedical applications has become a promising field in regenerative medicine. Self-assembling peptides (SAPs) have been proposed as a good candidate because they are able to self-assemble into stable hydrogels and interact with cells or molecules when combined together. This in turn can lead to the improved survival or action of cells or molecules to obtain the desired effects. In this study, we investigated whether the combination of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) w

Muscle-Derived Stem Cells Promote Angiogenesis and Attenuate Intimal Hyperplasia in Different Murine Vascular Disease Models

SJR Q2Stem Cells and Development

Muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs) are known to promote angiogenesis, but have never been studied in vascular diseases. We differentiated MDSCs into endothelial lineage cells in vitro by stimulation with shear stress and vascular endothelial growth factor. Such differentiated MDSCs (diff-MDSC) showed strong angiogenic potential in vitro. When tested in ischemic hindlimbs of mice, diff-MDSCs increased perfusion and decreased necrosis of the ischemic limbs, by promoting new vessel formation and by

Spontaneous Iliac Vein Rupture
Dae Hwan Kim, Hyung Sub Park, Taeseung Lee
SJR Q3Vascular Specialist InternationalOA

Spontaneous iliac vein rupture (SIVR) is a rare entity, which usually occurs without a precipitating factor, but can be a life-threatening emergency often requiring an emergency operation. This is a case report of SIVR in a 62-year-old female who presented to the emergency room with left leg swelling. Workup with contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a left leg deep vein thrombosis with May-Thurner syndrome and a hematoma in the pelvic cavity without definite evidence of arterial bleedi
