Triboelectric Nanogenerator‐Based Sensor Systems for Chemical or Biological Detection
Qitao Zhou, Jing Wen Pan, Shujun Deng, Fan Xia, Taesung Kim
SJR Q1Advanced Materials

The rapid advances in the Internet of things and wearable devices have created a massive platform for sensor systems that detect chemical or biological agents. The accelerated development of these devices in recent years has simultaneously aggravated the power supply problems. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent a thriving renewable energy technology with the potential to revolutionize this field. In this review, the significance of TENG-based sensor systems in chemical or biological

Inkjet Printing Based Mono-layered Photonic Crystal Patterning for Anti-counterfeiting Structural Colors
Hyunmoon Nam, Kyungjun Song, Dogyeong Ha, Taesung Kim
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Photonic crystal structures can be created to manipulate electromagnetic waves so that many studies have focused on designing photonic band-gaps for various applications including sensors, LEDs, lasers, and optical fibers. Here, we show that mono-layered, self-assembled photonic crystals (SAPCs) fabricated by using an inkjet printer exhibit extremely weak structural colors and multiple colorful holograms so that they can be utilized in anti-counterfeit measures. We demonstrate that SAPC patterns

SJR Q1Frontiers in Bioengineering and BiotechnologyOA

A microbial biosensor is an analytical device with a biologically integrated transducer that generates a measurable signal indicating the analyte concentration. This method is ideally suited for the analysis of extracellular chemicals and the environment, and for metabolic sensory regulation. Although microbial biosensors show promise for application in various detection fields, some limitations still remain such as poor selectivity, low sensitivity, and impractical portability. To overcome such

Cracking-assisted photolithography for mixed-scale patterning and nanofluidic applications
Minseok Kim, Dogyeong Ha, Taesung Kim
SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Cracks are observed in many environments, including walls, dried wood and even the Earth's crust, and are often thought of as an unavoidable, unwanted phenomenon. Recent research advances have demonstrated the the ability to use cracks to produce various micro and nanoscale patterns. However, patterns are usually limited by the chosen substrate material and the applied tensile stresses. Here we describe an innovative cracking-assisted nanofabrication technique that relies only on a standard phot

Multimodal and Covert–Overt Convertible Structural Coloration Transformed by Mechanical Stress
Qitao Zhou, Jun‐Gyu Park, Juyeol Bae, Dogyeong Ha, Jungyul Park, Kyungjun Song, Taesung Kim
SJR Q1Advanced Materials

Abstract Most materials and devices with structurally switchable color features responsive to external stimuli can actively and flexibly display various colors. However, realizing covert–overt transformation behavior, especially switching between transparent and colored states, is more challenging. A composite laminate of soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) with a rigid SiO 2 ‐nanoparticle (NP) structure pattern is developed as a multidimensional structural color platform. Owing to the similarity

SJR Q1Nano-Micro LettersOA

Yarn sensors have shown promising application prospects in wearable electronics owing to their shape adaptability, good flexibility, and weavability. However, it is still a critical challenge to develop simultaneously structure stable, fast response, body conformal, mechanical robust yarn sensor using full microfibers in an industrial-scalable manner. Herein, a full-fiber auxetic-interlaced yarn sensor (AIYS) with negative Poisson's ratio is designed and fabricated using a continuous, mass-produ

Active Alignment of Microtubules with Electric Fields
Taesung Kim, Ming‐Tse Kao, Ernest F. Hasselbrink, Edgar Meyhöfer
SJR Q1Nano Letters

The direction of translocation of microtubules on a surface coated with kinesin is usually random. Here we demonstrate and quantify the rate at which externally applied electric fields can direct moving microtubules parallel to the field by deflecting their leading end toward the anode. Effects of electric field strength, kinesin surface density, and microtubule translocation speed on the rate of redirection of microtubules were analyzed statistically. Furthermore, we demonstrated that microtubu

Ion concentration polarization in a single and open microchannel induced by a surface-patterned perm-selective film
Minseok Kim, Mingjie Jia, Taesung Kim
SJR Q2The Analyst

We describe a novel and simple mechanism for inducing ion concentration polarization (ICP) using a surface-patterned perm-selective nanoporous film like Nafion in single, open microchannels. Such a surface-patterned Nafion film can rapidly transport only cations from the anodic side to the cathodic side through the nanopore clusters so that it is possible to generate an ICP phenomenon near the Nafion film. In this work, we characterize transport phenomena and distributions of ion concentration u

We present a diffusion-driven and long-range concentration gradient generator that uses hydrogel as a porous membrane to prevent convection flows but allow the diffusion of cell signaling molecules for the study of bacterial chemotaxis in a microfluidic device. Using this device, we characterized the critical concentrations associated with the chemotactic responses of cells that initially created a population band and then migrated in bands in the presence of multiconcentration gradients. BACKGROUND: Rice germplasm collections continue to grow in number and size around the world. Since maintaining and screening such massive resources remains challenging, it is important to establish practical methods to manage them. A core collection, by definition, refers to a subset of the entire population that preserves the majority of genetic diversity, enhancing the efficiency of germplasm utilization. RESULTS: Here, we report whole-genome resequencing of the 137 rice mini core collection o
